To me "throwing in the towel" is trying to get any recruit out there to play next season to have a "full" roster when all the good quality guys are already taken. Then have these players for the next two to three years and they do absolutely nothing. Matts kinda an idiot.
I would just like to remind everyone that none of these new recruits have played a game as a cyclone and that fred hoiberg has yet to coach a game at any level. I know its not pleasant to think about, but it is the reality of the situation.
Matt and Miller (yes, I unfortunately listened on my way home from work) were trying to get CW to agree that the coaching staff was all in for next year, as if a huge amount of success was required from 2011 or the decision was some kind of bust- a ridiculous proposition in year 2 of a total rebuild.
It's pretty obvious that someone can't let their personal feelings and envy out of the way of their rational thought. Freddie is off to an amazing start, and the fact that there could be any serious expectations next year only proves that point.

Who knows what Matt was really trying to say - but its obvious that he chose to find any negative when presented w/ this new information - another transfer.
I don't think we're throwing in the towel - in any way shape of form. Just because the recent news has been about 2011 eligible players, doesn't mean we don't care about 2010. Fred has already stated specifically he's very excited about Diante Garrett, and that he would be working w/ Diante on his shot.... thinks he can have a big senior season. with Christopherson healthy, and another year of experience, I think he can be more consistent, more productive piece. Fred maintained all incoming players (miraculously) including Phillips, who could be productive, and Ejim who looks to be ready to play now, and McKnight who seems to have a high ceiling.
One thing we can't argue is the depth/ experience at the post positions - a weakness that I'm not sure there is much we can do about, short of spending scholly's on players we're not completely sold on (juco's or HSer's) who may not provide the talent/ production we need anyway. Nevertheless, I will be interested in this years team...

Don't know the details on the point that Matt/Miller or whoever would argue that point were trying to make concerning "Throwing in the Towel", but technically wasn't it McDermott, Colvin, Dendy, Hamilton, Buckley, Boozer, and Staiger that decided to throw in the towel on the 2010-2011 season?
I would say that Fred, the 4 returning players, all the recruits that came to ISU anyway, and all the transfers that have committed since have done the exact opposite of thowing in towels. Which I agree with the orginal post, that the attitude has changed both on the program and this board.
It seems to me that a couple of pretty good things have happend in the last couple months with regards to the program, 1. our inoming classes will now be more balanced, and 2. they'll have a chance to win in 2011-2012 with a good mix of upper classmen and younsters. How many people would've said that was possible at the start of the summer?
Time will tell if CFH can actually coach, but it's not going to be for a lack of effort.
This season is most likely going to be another rough one, I don't think anyone on here can really deny that.

So i guess having a lot of talent for year 2 is a bad thing now? Is that too early for matt? I agree that year 2 is important as hell. Isn't that why Fred lined up the talent for that year? Did Matt want him to wait until year 3? Year 3 will be fine as well.
Exactly my thoughts. Coach Lutz may not be Coach K but he is a very solid coach used to being a small school having to compete against the big boys, and did so pretty successfully,esp (and not trying to bash him) compared to McD.

Regarding Matt and his comments, he's a numbskull to suggest that Fred is throwing in the towel with Allen. The class balance that Fred has already achieved with his recruiting clearly shows that Matt is full of crap once again when it comes to ISU MBB.

Yeah, getting the services of a really good defender who happens to shoot 40% from three-land is "throwing in the towel". Easy to see the logic in that one.
Perhaps Fred could recruit this years class 3-A Iowa All-state BB team, redshirt them, and "build for the future".

Throwing in the towel? Give me a break. Having these transfer players will definitely make this year's team much, much better! Going against big twelve-ready guys every practice will make this year's team much more prepared for the rigors of the season.
Look, I love a Perrault bashing as much as the next guy but is he really wrong? No, he's not but I don't see anything wrong with the way FH has handled things so far. Obviously I'd like to see us win every game but thats not realistic, especialy this year. Sucess for this coaching staff will be measured by a lot more things that W's this season. This program was a very low place just a few months ago, changing the culture of the program isn't going to happen overnight, and it isn't going to happen by bringing in a few good players. Honestly, would you rather have a program that can sustain over time or have a couple good seasons with some juco's. In the last 15 years we've had coaches bring in solid juco classes which lead to some early sucess but they weren't able to keep that sucess going over time. I think FH is in this for the long haul and expectations for this season should be getting us on the right track. That can be accomplished by much more than winning ball games. I think the attitude the OP was talking about is the first step in getting that done. I think its easy to see why a guy like Matt wouldn't understand that, even with his vast experience with Mo Vally and SEC basketball.
