No CJ Morgan on the 2 deep for LBer's, and I see Hamlin still out there, I wish he was not listed, especially with the 198 lb roster weight.

There is absolutely NO reason whatsover for us not to have better LB depth than that. NONE. We have a gazillion WRs and RBs, and have a 198 lb LB in our 2 deep. Most high schools don't have 198 lb LBs. I'm sorry.

The size of our DE's isn't much better. I REALLY feel for Wally getting the shaft in talent. Our offense had better win the games for us by scoring 30+ pts a game. Wally's hands are tied BIG TIME!

once sims gets back, that defensive backfield is SOLID. Add in some young LB talent, that could be a stout back 7

6'3 198 is a string bean of a LB

holy cow.
I saw several practices and Hamlin can really run and has a nose for the ball. He also is good a stripping the ball. He reminds me of Nick Moser in that respect only he is a much better LB than Moser was. He will be ok out there.

I am not questioning the heart, desire, or speed of the LBers, but the size. Heck most RBs are bigger than the backup LBers. I think they will be good in coverage, and in tackling in the open field, I just worry about them being taken out of the play by a FB or TE. Teams that really run the ball are going to be hard to stop. Northern IL is going to be running a lot, so we will see right away what happens.

Kevin Hamlin was huge reach by Chizik. I guess we'll see if he's worth it.

I'm really excited about the OL for 2010 and going forward. Even if KO goes pro after this year, ISU will still have Burris, Hicks, Lichenburg, Bykowski, Caspers, and Tuftee all coming back. That is a really, really solid group.

Not to mention the solid class we brought in last year with Gannon and Farniok.

The past 5 seasons we have been good at LB. Even when some were worried about it the LB poss has been the good point of the D. Is there any reason to think it wont be different this year.

I'm not worried. All the spread offenses we play we need more DB's on the field and less LB's anyways. And actually having small LB's against the spread really isn't a bad thing either.. assuming they are faster and better at dropping back which isn't always the case. But if they are smart and have heart, size doesn't matter. Its against teams like Iowa and power running team we want the big stacked LB's.

There is no such thing as luck when it comes to recruiting .When we lose a recruit to another team, it's our fault. When we sign someone prematurely, it's our fault. When we have a team of walkons, dwarves, and beanpoles, it's our fault.

I think it is very good that Bailey Johnson is starting ahead of Jake M because the coaches have been raving about Jake M all Fall camp, so that has to mean that Bailey Johnson is also impressing.

I actually think that, barring any major injuries, this years DL will be significantly better then last years. Secondary too! I think the LB'ers will be faster and more athletic. I think we will be in for a pleasant surprise out of our D this year.

I think that what people are missing here with the defensive line is that you should be playing 6 to 8 guys and rotating them throughout the game. You want your players fresh and going as hard as possible at all times.

There aren't too many defensive tackles that can play continuously throughout a game. Jake will get his playing time.

Why do fans get bent out of shape over the depth chart? It's never right. Ever. The 1st game starts and we all go....wow (blank) is starting instead of (blank)

Couple of interesting things that stood out to me...

Bailey Johnson over Jake McDonough.

Woody AND James White over Shontrelle Johnson. If SJ is truly #4, don't we have to RS him? Why waste a year? I guess it's up to Shontrelle and what he wants to do, right?

Just take it as a good thing. Perhaps he isn't that far (experience, familiarity with the system) from being in it at the #2 spot. I'm just speculating, but maybe seeing some snaps is what he needs to move up that depth chart. If a player can end up being the difference between a W and an L in just one game, it is worth the eligibility.

Any chance we will see him as a surprise taking Sims' spot on returns? He's listed but they don't really have first and second teams on returns listed.

Agreed.

I think the RB that comes in for A-Rob will depend on the situation.

If they want someone to come in and get some tough yards on 3rd and short or they want to make sure they have the best pass blocker in there, they might go with Woody. He seems to be getting props as being "Mr. Consistent". Woody will be the "change of pace" backup.

If they want to bring in someone with a bit more speed who more closely mirrors A-Robs skill set, they will bring in White or Shontrelle. I feel that the only advantage that White has over Shontrelle at this point is familiarity with the system. Neither have playes a snap yet. I can see the staff getting Shontrelle used to the speed of the game at the college level and, when they have more confidence in him, he will overtake White as the "every down backup".

After a few games to get him used to the college game, I have a feeling that Shontrelle would be the one they would call on if A-Rob were to miss more than a series or two. Woody is a great kid and has earned everything he is getting, but I don't think he has the full skill set to make this offense run on all cylinders.

After a closer look, one good thing to see about this depth chart is the amount of RSFresh, Fresh and Sophs on it. That is some great experience for this program as a whole in the coming years....

J. J. Bass

You know what is missing from this pre-season? Extensive deliberation on the prospects of J. J. Bass. It just doesn't feel the same.
