Subbing in for Rich Bellingham to do play by play...late in the 1st half a play occurred where one of the Texas ladies reached over the back to grab a rebound. Brent says "She's over the top of the ISU player...then a pause...then he goes "Moody was displaced!" Molly Parrot laughed. So you can tell he's consciously aware of not saying anything he accuses us fans of always doing. Lol

Ha! Glad you caught that! Great first half for the Cyclones.
Love it when you call the women's games. Enthusiastic, right on top on the action, and no whining about calls or non-calls...how refreshing. Wish you did all the games!

I appreciated that Blum column very much. His columns are always an enjoyable read.

However, I disagreed with his thoughts on 3 seconds in that piece. More than any other call, I think having a knowledgeable fan courtside to yell 3 seconds is extremely helpful. It is an area where the refs rarely look, but I know that I have personally influenced games in the past when I yelled "3 seconds" or "watch the lane" when it was quiet. The refs aren't typically looking at the lane or a player's feet in the lane. But, once it's yelled, watch the ref look at it and he'll start counting. It's the most effective way for a fan to pick up an extra turnover or two per game for the team and that can make all the difference!

Plus, I've reffed games before where a fan (parent) did that and it influenced me. There are so many moving parts in a play that you don't always have time to watch a big man's feet in the lane. However, if someone is yelling it in your ear, then you can't ignore it and are practically forced to look.

Thus, keep yelling 3 seconds ISU fans! Dont' be discouraged by the Blum article, or embarrassed to do it. I don't think there's any call in the game you can influence more than the 3 second call. It's got the least amount of "discretion" as any call. It is entirely objective - watch the lane - count to 3. Keep doing it!

There are no knowledgeable fans yelling three seconds.

I can ignore it - and do - repeatedly.

This is true. However, what got overlooked in Chitown's post was that in addition to the ref hearing it there is a pretty good chance that the opposing player hears it too. Some won't care but others will think: "The refs will be watching me since the fans are calling it out; I'd better be careful and not pitch my tent in the lane again." Whether pointing it out gets the call or gets the offensive player to quit camping out in the lane - even for a few possessions - it has accomplished the goal.

There is no tent pitching in Women's basketball...well maybe down at Baylor.

He got it correct which is better then the big network people do. They continue to call "over the back", they all need to read Brents post.

Well, speaking in absolutes shows that you're either not being serious or have unreasonable opinions about people. "No" knowledgeable fans yelling three seconds? Maybe there are fans who aren't counting or only counting to 2 before yelling three seconds, but most fans in my experience who yell it seem to be on to something. It's outlandish to assume "no" knowledgeable fans yell three seconds when hundreds of thousands of fans have probably yelled it at various basketball games over the years.

Plus, its one of the most objective infractions in the game. Step one: watch players foot (only one foot has to remain in the lane). Step two: count to three. If you're ignoring it, you're being a ****** official. It's easy as a fan to point out that mistake to an official.

Also, the point at which a fan is yelling three seconds is not necessarily the point at which the infraction is occurring. The fan may just be encouraging the ref to take notice.

I loved a call Blum had in the second half. Texas was called for an offensive foul via displacement. Blum got super excited and exclaimed "great call Scotty Yarbough".
