We could compete with the likes of Texas who was for years the wealthiest program in the country because there was only so much value they could get from their last few million dollars. They literally had to manufacture ways to unload some of that money. With the ability to pay players it shaves that last $20M off of everyone's war chest so it helps the richest of the rich get value again out of their historically bloated budgets. They have to be wildly enthusiastic about all of this.

I agree that adding another step-change cost for everyone definitely favors the rich, more than the arms race in which the rich were mostly adding to their excess.

The biggest issue is tightening the belt to pay for athletes makes it even more difficult to keep salary driven coaches

On the other hand, a capped player compensation environment can mitigate some of the advantages top programs have always enjoyed in player acquisition.

I think we’ve already seen some of that impact with less stacked blue bloods

That, in combination with competing against similar schools for the new access that has come from CFP expansion, makes the football side for coaching tenable, if not improved

If the sport was ever taken over by a singular force-profit entity, that would be interesting. I think that entity’s pursuit of profits would mandate spending caps

Is he though?

Not sure ive heard of anything this season about him causing issues. He just keeps going out there and getting sacked and getting back up.

If you're referencing the nails, that's cause his mom does that for a living. Not sure that has anything to do with being a diva either
Lol no not the nails. It's different but I don't care. He's had some questionable body language on the sidelines throughout his playing career.

Speaking as a Bears fan, id say the overwhelming favorites are Ben Johnson and Joe Brady
Personally Ben Johnson is at the top of the list distant second is Pete Caroll and Brian Flores realistically because I think Vrabel is going to NE and I just get the ick with Joe Brady with how things went in Carolina

Seems like MC is the only CFB coach considered. Why? Why not Dillingham, Prime, Day, Smart, Kelly, Sark, Dabo, Freeman?

@brett108, would you care to share why you think this is dumb?
I'll be honest I didn't know I had reacted to your post. I will retract the dumb and you can save your internet points I guess.

But you hit the nail on the head. ISU has soul searching to do going forward. Things are going to get harder and harder in the Big12 relative to the B1G/SEC/ND.

Yep. That narrative is so played out. Anyone still pushing that is either a hater or just not paying attention.

If you all are interested in listening to special kind of stupid, check this out.

He's never has NFL job openings been offered before so this is different. Matt Rhule did the same thing and left and so Matt will too.

Questionable body language? That makes someone a diva?

The NFL has some divas for sure. And most of them are known for a lot more than body language.

Don’t you think if he was really causing problems we’d have heard about it? Outside of like one unsubstantiated report, everything has indicated that the team has fully supported him all season.

Important to add that the one (unconfirmed) report that stirred the pot back in November had to do with his play, and absolutely nothing to do with his leadership.

Not saying this is you, but I feel like the fact that Caleb is a little out there (with the nails and whatnot), has absolutely contributed to the unfair perception he is a “diva”.

Yeah maybe the nails but I really wasn't talking about that lol. Jared McCain for the Sixers paints his nails and I haven't heard of him being classified as a diva.

For sure. Admittedly, I wasn’t a fan of CW in college (for obvious reasons) and definitely saw him as a diva going into the draft.

As a Bear fan I’m biased of course but based on what I watched (and read) this season, I no longer feel that way.

But not to get this thread off topic… I definitely do not think Matt Campbell and CW would gel.

NFL HC is a true CEO. A lot of the success boils down to Coordinators and your GM’s people management. Could see Matt with Nate as an OC and Manning with a position coach? Sure. Do I see John Heacock moving to New Jersey? Less likely.

Yeah Matt likes molding young men, but do we really think he couldn’t relate to older NFL guys? Andy Reid is notorious for being a rehabber for guys who have lost their way. Matt could be that. His players love him.

Dan Campbell isn’t flashy. Belichick wasn’t flashy. Tomlin isn’t flashy. Jim Harbaugh is a weirdo, but he’s a winner. All those guys win/won with culture.

I think some of us are conflating our lack of Blue Chip 5 Stars with Matt’s preferences. We’d have those guys at ISU if we had the $$ and prestige to get them AND if they fit the culture.

Right now Sark seems like the only one that has an NFL demeanor. Freeman maybe.

Those other dufuses' fake tough guy bro act mixed with temper tantrums like an 8 year old at everything that doesn't go your way wouldn't last a minute in the NFL.

Let's also keep in mind that maybe MC is at an age where a typical NFL player still seems like a moldable young man.

This may have been mentioned already, but I can see some similarities between our Coach Campbell and the Lions Coach Campbell, especially when it comes to building a culture. That may be really appealing to the Bears organization as they look over at their division rivals.

Anybody who thinks CMC would live in Chicago is a moron, suburbs are really nice and family friendly. Not saying he is going, but Iowa also has some #### holes too.

Yeah, wasn't suggesting they would live downtown FFS. Even then, though, that'd be a what, minimum 2 hour roundtrip drive for him to/from work everyday? Just what every father is looking for, I'm sure!

Let Coach go out and explore. If he goes, then we should bless him, be happy for him and be thankful we had him and made ISU legit. If he goes, it will present ISU with opportunities to either get someone that will continue to build on what Campbell has done or we will be blessed with someone that will get us back to be suck again. Either way CMC is a legend and if he goes, I will personally not be angry as I was with Fred Hoiberg. I mean Fred being got us have TJ, though it was after Prohm. Maybe bring Nate Scheelhaase back as head coach? He could sell to the recruits that he has connections with the NFL people. or Alex Golesh? I mean most us didn't think TJ would make ISU legit as is the case right now. so why not.

I’m very aware

A modern day Mount Rushmore of NCAA is also a Mount Rushmore of NFL failures.

Saban
Meyer
Spurrier
Etc

I am by no means saying CMC will be offered any job. Or that he should. Or that he will buck the trend and be successful in the nfl. Not at all.

My point is:

It’s a testament to his success as a coach to even be considered and ….if true…..asked to interview.

With MC, it’s so much more than the fact that he is a great coach. It’s the fact that he WANTS to be here. Give any coach 10 years at a P5 and they could probably luck their way into a few winning seasons. MC being an elite coach is icing.

If he were to leave, the program is in a great place and I’m sure we could make a great hire. The thing that we could not replace, however, is the security MC brings. Any coach we bring on from outside of the ISU family and doesn’t have ties here will probably see ISU as a stepping stone.

There are definitely in game coaching things that frustrate me about MC once in awhile, but he is truly a once in a lifetime coach for us and losing him would be devastating.
