Roughly five-sevenths of this album I either dislike or don't hold my interest (I felt that way in ’97, and I do today). Sounds like an awkward transition between the “lo-fi/basement-tape” period and “arena rock/modern rock radio” phase. Even so, It does have a few standouts that I still play time-to-time, but haven’t listened to it front-to-back for years. (Other GBV fans may differ with my opinion, and/or my song choices).

My favorite track on the LP:

Short & sweet in the vein of "Alien Lanes," and interlude/bridge sets it apart:

Collective Soul released their 3rd album, Disciplined Breakdown, on 3-11-1997

Favorite Band, Favorite Album

I see someone beat me to them but here it is anyway! This album is a front to back listen IMO

"Great minds," as they say. :) ;) ... When I posted those tracks I thought maybe someone would get to full LP, so that's cool, in the spirit of the thread.

Now I probably should "Listen" to the entire album. :)

My next question, now that I'm inspired to sample full album: I don't know how extensive your Collective Soul knowledge is for the long-players, but if you know several in-depth, do you have a pecking order?

Only one I've indulged to any extent, repeated, is the self-titled (2nd release). Even that one hasn't been in heavy rotation for quite a while.

Notorious B.I.G. - Life after death

This was the final album for one of the all time great gansta rappers. The album published posthumously, since he ("Biggie" / real name Christopher Wallace) died tragically from a drive by shooting 2 weeks before its release at the tender age of 24. The album name was certainly ironic, but its content was a meld of the gansta rap theme with pop style and radio friendly lyrics. For these reasons it was considered groundbreaking. And the result was that went diamond, and remains one of the top rap albums of all time.

My personal favorite, Sky's the limit, features Biggie re-imagining himself as a young teen on the brink of stardom in a plush upscale setting:

Perhaps the biggest hit, Mo Money Mo Problems, features dance sequences with make duos clad in loud, primary color jump suits and funky shades - all to a backdrop of late a late 70's disco beat:

I have them all and honestly if you're through #2 and DB and still liking it, you can proceed in order. IMO they have continued to put out good work. I haven't yet gotten the new release, though.
Hints and allegations is a bit of a different beast, still good but you'd be heading a different direction with that one.

Thanks for info/advice.

I did at one time own "Hints Allegations..." - seemed to have more to offer some good stuff beyond "Shine" (the ONLY thing I ever hear played from the LP even now on 90s XM radio). I remember it being kind of hit or miss.

I love it, but its very different from what came after and the direction they took. If you keep listening and keep liking you can tell where they changed and where some of the personnel switched but they consistently jam.
Hints was really an Ed Roland demo, thus some difference.

Lonestar "Crazy Nights" This is the last album they released as a 5 person band before John Rich "left" - he later on has basically admitted he got kicked out due to difference of style/direction of music they wanted to do.

This one is a little known song but one of my favorites from the album that John sang the lead on
