One and Done Recruiting

If you look at recent history, more and more one and done players are turning into role players or bit contributors than they are "stars":

Role Players and Bit Contributors:

  • Ben McLemore
  • Anthony Bennett
  • Shabazz Muhammad
  • Austin Rivers
  • Quincy Miller
  • Brandon Knight, Cory Joseph, Avery Bradley, Xavier Henry, etc.

Stars:

  • Anthony Davis
  • John Wall
  • Boogie Cousins
  • Kyrie Irving
  • Kevin Durant, etc.

The NBA is now looking at increasing the age minimum to 20 from 19, which could be huge for college basketball and could shift recruiting more from "where can I win in one year" to "where can I develop best in 2-3 years to be the best NBA player".

My question is are college coaches that are recruiting this talent failing to develop some of these players or do we just not have as many young stars going into the league as we used to and the coaches have nothing to do with it?

The NBA is just terrible at scouting. They draft guys with size and athleticism, but seem to ignore actual basketball talent and skill.

Its also REALLY hard to become an all star level NBA player.

Yeah, if they do increase the age limit by a year it would just be to make scouting easier for them. I'd rather they just went back to drafting high schoolers and ending the one and done phenomenon.

I think there are probably many good scouts in the NBA. I think the problem are the GMs/owners/coaches that salivate over some 7-foot stiff thinking they can change them into something useful.

Making them stay for 2 years in college. It would make college basketball and nba better imo.

Without checking, I think that the current arrangement expires in 2017 and the Commissioner is of the camp of upping the age to 20.

Outside of the obvious reasons to root for someone like Monte to make it big in the NBA would be showing the country that Fred can develop players not perceived to be one and dones into solid NBA players. I think the rule change could really benefit schools like us with solid coaches that don't necessarily have the same blue blood pedigrees of other institutions.

On the other hand, think how stacked schools like Kansas and Kentucky would be if they had rosters full of two year's worth of five star, blue chip recruits.

True and Calipari's record speaks for itself (Davis, Cousins, Wall, Rose, etc), but Self's record isn't as great. Is that because he isn't getting the same talent or he isn't developing them the same? I'm not sure. Self is a solid in game coach, but I would hope this rule change would benefit coaches who do a better job developing talent than just simply winning games.

I see coaches like Fred, Billy Donovan and others getting more support. Clearly some of Fred's guys were different players in his system than their previous systems. He just hasn't had them long enough to realize their full potential IMO. I wonder if Joakim Noah would have been the same player in the NBA if he had been coached by Calipari instead of Donovan. Would that factor in a recruits mind?

Keep in mind that an 18-19 year old kid in the NBA is playing against guys that are 10+ years older than they are. Those young kids might still be growing, and they are definitely still learning the game and working on getting stronger. Mentally they have to learn that they are now average, when they had previously always been far-and-away the best player on the court.

And really, the majority of NBA players are role players. So even if you're good enough to be an NBA player coming out of high school, then most of the high school kids will be role players too. They might become All-Stars, but it's more likely to happen to someone who's been in the league for a little bit.

You could argue UK retained at least four of their McD players from last year.

4 of our 5 "one and done" players have been All Big 12 players...and the one who wasn't was still one of the best players on the team.

I like our "one and done" strategy under CFH. Kane, Anderson, BDJ, Clyburn and Royce. I'd like to see any NCAA team try to match up with that.

I think we would see a lot more people go play overseas and get paid for 2 years.
