So I am turning 21 soon, but I am an out of state resident. My license expires on my 21st birthday and this poses a question: Will my card not be allowed to buy alcohol since it would be expired?

Has anyone dealt with this before? Do states offer Out of State license renewal?

Should I just get an Iowa License on my 21st?

You can get an Iowa license if you live here for school. Just go to the DOT.

Well I know in Ohio, you can "renew" your license up to 6 months but it is technically a new license which is a different fee than if you renew it up to 30 days after it expires. If you wait till after 6 months you have to retake the driving test

Pretty sure in Iowa the fee is the same for 60 days. I know it was $20 for a 5 year license.

FYI, if you got an Iowa license, and eventually moved back to Ohio...they will also make you retake the written portion of the test to transfer over an out-of-state license back to an Ohio license. It's not big deal, but if you can get back to Ohio to renew...probably the better idea.

You will probably have trouble buying alcohol with an expired license; even though it is still valid 30 up to 60 days beyond expiration as others have pointed out, most clerks won't understand this (identity theft precaution) and they'll only see that it is expired and therefore not a "valid" ID.

Upon quick internet search, it appears there are ways to renew an Ohio license online, for military and persons living temporarily out of state. You could probably investigate that further to see if you qualify.

I am not sure what might happen with your insurance if you change state of licensing. I assume you need to get rated from Iowa if you change, which might be cheaper. Also your plates?

Have a son in grad school out of state, he was dismayed how much the insurance was compared to Iowa. Might be worth switching it all unless you want to wind up back in Ohio and then it is just a hassle.

It would surprise me if they bothered to look at the expiration date -- or is that required?

They typically verify the DOB and the expiration when they look, while ensuring it is a photo ID. Not saying that everyone does this with rigor, so you might be able to get by at a few places, but I'd bet more often than not you'd be denied. You also have to take into account the different orientation and colors for licenses under 21, which was put in place as a quick visual indicator for minors. I remember Ohio has something like that in place now.

As for scanning, I have no idea how those work. It is probably just used to quickly verify the same information on the front of your card, and with extra security since a scannable strip is harder to replicate. I don't think it would be smart enough to tell the clerk it is ok and within the grace period even though it is expired. It would probably throw a flag if it is expired.

I also turn21 this month. I have a license that is snipped to signify expiring, and a paper from my DMV that states I have a new one coming. Should be enough for bars/purchase, right? Anybody with similar experience?

I'm a Wisconsin resident and I turned 22 and had my license expire in September. I was just walking around with an expired license up until this last weekend when I went home to visit family. Most bars here in Ames had me show a second form just because that's policy. Liquor stores gave me the benefit of the doubt.

Now I have one of those stupid *** papers and a license with VOID punched through it until I get the new one in the mail. Not looking forward to whipping out a piece of paper instead of a license for the bouncers this weekend.
