What determines whether the Big 12 would keep P5 status? Wikipedia says that the P5 conferences are designated as "autonomy conferences" by the NCAA. Such conferences appear to have less restrictions on how they can use their financial resources.

Well, not sure who runs that committee, but if the "alliance" conferences have good sway there (and presumably they would) they could certainly ensure themselves of another very loyal and supportive conference by keeping the Big12 as P5...

TT and KSU have horrible academics, and are not AAU schools. TT football history is a lot like our when they had Leach as head coach, while Snyder was great at KSU, but going forward we still do not know if they can repeat what Snyder accomplished.

Your characterization is poorly made. Both are level one research universities. USNews ranks public university academics: K-State (#83), oSu (#95), TxT (#109), WVU (#117). ISU is #54 for comparison. Oregon State #71. Washington State #87.

Current Pac-12 rankings:

UCLA #1
Cal #2
Washington #19
Arizona #40
Utah #40
Arizona State #46
Colorado #46
Oregon #46
Oregon State #71
Washington State #87

And of course Stanford and USC are elite private universities as well.

I have a hard time seeing “We are basically as good as OSU and WSU” being good enough if academics actually matter here.

Also why does USNWR have so many ties?

why expand now?

wait until your tv contracts are up and then it will happen.

this is another "no news" story.

Well that was to be expected. The only way they could say they would expand is if they took all 8 leftovers. Knew that wasn’t going to happen.
Yep. I think we’ve long concluded a PAC-Big 12 merger was not going to happen. There are several teams that they would just not have interest in.

Yep. If they were going to expand later, saying that they would do so now would screw the Big 12 teams in their exit negotiations with OU and UT

I keep seeing people articulate this idea but why would the Pac-12 base its strategic decisions on when and how much Big 12 schools get paid?
