Iowa State senior long snapper Steven Wirtel is one of three finalists for the Patrick Mannelly Award, delivered to the nation's best long snapper.

Wirtel is a bit on the small side (weight-wise) for an NFL snapper, but there are about 6 or 7 that are lighter or the same weight as him. His 6-4 height puts him in the top half in that statistic. It really comes down to an NFL team needing someone since there are so few jobs. Nobody carries a back up, they generally just have a tight end or linebacker who has done it and can fill in in an emergency. Then they would pick someone up if their guy will be out multiple games.
