Pell Grants

Arvell Nelson stated that the money in the pictures was from a Pell Grant, at least someone in the media asked, but my question is did any of you get a Pell Grant and if so isn't the grant sent directly to the school and used as a credit or did any of you actually get a check that you cashed.
Also he's got a full ride so why would he need a grant? I'm not ready to buy into the explanantion but thought I'd ask in case I'm wrong.

If it's anyhting like loans then he got the money that was left over. In his case, since he's got a ride, he probably got it all back.

I remember there was a certain day that loans were available. After ISU took their money you'd get a check for the remaining balance. There used to be a huge line to get those checks. Not sure if that's they way they do it now.

Yes, this is true SuperCy. However, you can get it directly deposited into your account now. That is a good question - do any scholarship players receive loans? Why would they?

I remember getting a check for about $4,500 and cashing it. The way I felt at the time, I can see Nelson wanting to flaunt it a little. Of course now, looking back, I wish I would've used it towards the rest of my tuition.

Aw, c'mon, 22, you're just being hard on Arvell. EVERYONE is getting their license suspended for driving drunk and then gettin arrested because they just keep driving.

The surplus of any loans are now direct deposited into your checking account. It was like that all 4 years for me (2000-2004).

I thought Pell Grants were based quite a bit on need. Since he has his tuition, room and board paid for what is his needs? I guess books have gone up these days.

Oh hell no. I was more than happy to get it. Since I got married, I was considered "poverty" and they gave me a grant

How do you get a pell grant if you are already on full scholarship? Don't they look at those things when granting money?

My wife is in grad school at iowa. And we've been getting the excess off her Stafford loans directly deposited into our checking accout. And that excess can be substantial. This semester, her tuition was in the neighborhood of 4500, but her award was over 10K.

oh btw - you can make that deposit ANY FREAKING DAY NOW iowa!!! I've dealt with 17 y/o cashiers at Kum&Go who have a better grasp on what they're doing.

Financial need is determined by the Department of Education using a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the financial information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and to determine the family EFC. The fundamental elements in this standard formula are the student’s income (and assets if the student is independent), the parents’ income and assets (if the student is dependent), the family’s household size, and the number of family members (excluding parents) attending postsecondary institutions.

If I recall correctly, scholarships are not considered student income. I know I didn't have to report my scholarship information on the FAFSFA. I'm pretty sure athletes on a full ride scholarship are eligible for grants. It doesn't seem right, but it is what it is.
