I was just talking to a buddy about this type of money (more re: NBA). Look at Wiggington, he likely could have had first round money if he left early (after fresh year) but didn't and now is not (and to be fair, basketball seems to have a secondary path of international ball, etc that can get very good money).

$1.4 million is A LOT of money....but if you start taking into account the agent fees, taxes, potentially needing to pay back some advance money/training, etc. you'd have to be VERY disciplined to have it sustain...now, granted, $1.4 is way better than zero or no shot. (and if you can stick with a practice squad you still get REAL good money compared to a "real" job).

Look, I don’t want to derail this thread, but Wigginton came back because he was projecting as 2nd round/undrafted. Marcus Smart cost himself serious coin by staying for a second year (though that worked out alright).

Could Butler have improved his stock by staying? Definitely. Could have also gotten hurt, or not improved and cost himself a potential year of earning opportunity. You could second guess these decisions forever, but it seems safe to assume that Butler got - and Kolar will get - sound advice from the coaching staff.

Some of these guys may feel a sense of guilt holding up the depth chart for the younger dudes who have put in the time. Chase was robbed a bit by injuries early in his collegiate career.
Another year of Allen is exactly what the TE rooms needs. Dean and probably Moore are ready to excell as receivers but Chase is the guy that can lead by example on how to be the whole package.

I wonder if Schweiger will move to RT next year with Downings return. He played there a bit in the bowl game.
Schweiger was very good at RT. Moved him out there and put Hufford in at RG. ISU is going to have some serious depth on the OL. If they make even close to the improvement they made this season, they will be dominant.

Is it a stretch to say our offensive line across the board could be preseason 1st or second team?

Downing and Newell (first)
Foster, Simmons, Schweiger (second)

We will see what the staff does at the right tackle spot.

I agree. Schweiger at tackle puts our best 5 on the field.

That's huge. Effectively the same offense as last year minus some tight ends. That's not a small loss, considering their role on the offense, but it's really encouraging.

Soehner is the only one who has indicated that he's gone on offense so far. Don't count Kolar out quite yet.

The only position I have much of a concern about right now for next year is D-line. And even then there's guys there like Lee and Peterson that will be good. (McDonald will continue to be great)

Knock on wood- I think we’ve graduated beyond needing to play true Fr on the OL.
They'd be second year true freshmen.
Plus if we keep winning we just might get a true freshman in the future that's just to good not to start.

Coming back an extra year makes sense for Chase. He is a 240lb TE. IF he can have a big off-season in the weight room and add 15 lbs. he should be a better blocker and more appealing to an NFL team.

Especially if he is our primary pass catching TE next season.

The one thing everyone has to remember is that ISU won't be the only team with players opting to return for a freebie year.

That said, it sure is nice to have it happen when ISU has difference makers taking that opportunity. There were a lot of seasons in the past where a couple of guys coming back wouldn't have made much of a difference.

Butler was going to be the same guy. His production may have changed but he wasn't likely to fix the concerns. His outcome was likely to be the same no matter when he went. He was hurt much more by being injured right away. Unless there's a lot invested in you, that's just about impossible to come back from.

Being a 3rd-4th round pick is nothing to slouch at. You’re almost guaranteed a roster spot at that point.

Also, this is not a super deep TE class. Charlie has a chance to move up if he tests out well.
As a Chiefs/Cyclone fan, Travis Kelce, the Chief's star tight end is 31 and will probably retire in two years. Kohler is the same type of tight end and would be an excellent replacement for the Chiefs when Kelce retires. I would guarantee that if Kohler goes in the 3-4th Round, the Chiefs will pick him up. Besides that ISU and Chiefs are both Cardinal and Gold.
