We are 38 days away until Iowa State kicks off the season against Kansas State in Ireland. To keep getting you prepared for the season, we will continue with out position previews every weekday through July 25. Next up is a group with a blend of experience and unknowns; the wide receivers.

1) Chase Sowell is the most exciting WR i'm looking forward to watching this year. Down the field threat, tall receiver who has wheels
2) Brett Eskildsen is the most interesting WR to me to watch - he could be our move the chains reliable 3rd down WR. (the Deshaunte Jones type WR)
3) Xavier Townsend to me is a must start player. I think he has a good rapport and history with Rocco and has game breaking speed.

I'm interested if they give Abu Sama a shot at slot wide receiver and decide to use him in the way the 49ers used Debo Samuel. Abu Sama could be effective in reverses, end arounds, and short passes to get yards after the catch. To me he's not a good RB and RB needs to be fully stationed by Carson Hansen and Ryver Peppers.

That’s an intriguing thought. Maybe his tendency to run east-west could pay off more often in the open field. It hurt us far too often last year as an RB.

IIRC, didn’t we see Abu in a few spots last year in slot and he got a couple quick passes out to him? Possibly toward the end of the year?

I think that the X factor is Jackson. He was slated to start last year before getting injured and they spent all season searching for WR3 once he was out. Is he back to that level at this point? We could see a step forward for Eskildsen, Overby or Green. And, I wouldn't rule out Robinson playing if he's ready. That said, I 100% believe that the TE room is going to get more catches this year and we'll see a lot more 12 and 13 personnel that we did last year.

1) Sowell and Townsend are going to be somewhere around ‘23 Jayden and Jaylen.

2) Everyone is looking forward to having DJ back. Remember, he was once considered to have NFL protection.

3) Brett Eskildsen may well end up in the top three in catches. Not just a “move the chains” guy, he’s the fastest wideout on the team. Probably the fastest that’s eveer seen the field for ISU—since Quaron Adams didn’t.

And it’s only close because…

4) Dominic Overby is right behind him. His athleticism is on a level with Kene and DP, and he’s 6’5” and will probably be over 200 this season. He’s a little behind Eskildsen.

The pair have the fastest 100m times of any wideouts to ever actually play at ISU. Er, so far.

5) We have three very talented freshmen. Of the three, Dyllan Malone enrolled early, and got a chance to add needed muscle—and that familiarity with the offense might give him an edge on the youngsters.

6) The real wildcard here is Michael “Jamaica” Parkes, who has been injured the last two years. If he’s finally fully healthy, he could be a real surprise.

Also, I did hear them say this spring that some RB was spending time also working in the slit, but I didn’t catch who. It might have been Sama, it could have been Flora or Peppers.

Last night, I was talking football with some neighbors and one of our big questions was about wide receivers. We started by wondering "if" we can replace the production of Higgins and Noel, but we went deeper and asked "why" those two were so productive. Certainly they had the talent, but we also wondered if there an issue with Rocco's progressions or perhaps he just didn't trust some of the other guys. We may have a "better" offense, in a Mike Leach way, if we have a wider range of threats and more true passing targets. We may not "replace" Higgins and Noel with two other guys who step up, but with four or five who are legitimate threats anytime they are on the field. And maybe have Brahmer as the third down target.

Thanks for bringing up Parkes. I remember a couple years ago him being mentioned as the next stud WR…. and then the injuries started and we basically never heard anything about him again. I have no idea if he’s lost a step now or not, but if he’s healthy I think you’re right that he could surprise as well.

I think it was part that Rocco had two guys that he trusted implicitly (Brahmervwoujd have been three), and no one else was quite ready to step up.

This year, they’re all on more or less equal footing from a “trust” standpoint—and the talent and experience level has improved across the board.
