I thought it was interesting that Rhoads is in favor of it, and Ferentz is opposed.

If we do get to this point... The average Power 5 record each season will be .500. I imagine that will take some adjusting to for many fanbases.

As a fan of the sport, I would love to see more games between these top-tier opponents. I would also like to see a way for non-Power 5 schools to be involved as well.

If the playoff ever goes to 8 schools, maybe one of the slots can be reserved for the best non-Power 5 team.

Finally! A thread about only power 5 schools, so no LakesBison. This thread has potential...

He's probably to the point where he plays such a hard schedule every year that it won't be much more difficult than it already is. Meanwhile, Ferentz gets 2-3 games against directional Michigan every year.

It's a terrible idea in my opinion for the big name teams. There are only so many wins to go around without all the Big teams getting 2-3 gimmes. Won't change much for teams like ISU, but you'll no longer see too many teams with double digit wins.

Why can't the power 5 just agree to not schedule below FBS.

Why? I always love an exciting matchup between Alabama and HKSB (Hellen Keller School for the Blind).

It's great for fans no doubt, but I'm saying the upper tier schools are going to get ticked off when their total number of wins goes way down.

I can see why this might happen

Power 5 teams probably play 10 regular season games (roughly) against other Power 5 schools right now apiece. That's 325 games to televise.

Bump that up to 12 and you have 390 games to televise. Even more massive TV contracts, only split 5 ways between the big conferences.

And with autonomy for the Power 5, more money means they could make better rules about player compensation, cost of attendance, etc, and put that money into bigger, newer stadiums and top-tier coaches.

The Power 5 could absolutely demolish the non-Power 5 schools in terms of player quality in a short period of time. This is largely happening already, but I think it would increase. A player from a non-P5 school that had a great season as a sophomore would be more likely to transfer up now. Lower-tier networks like FSN would choose to take the scraps of the Power 5 over the best games that the non-Power 5 schools had to offer.

So from the perspective of the Power 5 on the whole, it does look positive. For Iowa State, the pros would be more money and no more competition with the likes of Tulsa or SMU for recruits. The cons would be an even tougher schedule and likely less money relative to the schools with which we compete.

He actually should have interest in this story. If it comes to this, FCS teams will lose out on a LOT of big paydays.

At that point the Power 5 should just dump the NCAA and form their own league where they can do whatever the hell they want including JUST paying football and basketball players and not having to worry about title 9 considerations so much.

Title IX come down from the government, so unless the universities don't want to accept any federal funds, I'd think they'd have to still follow title IX wouldn't they?

I honestly didn't remember if it was governmental or NCAA mandated.

It sounds sexist, but I think Title IXs relevance has passed. It was created to boost up women's sports and it worked. To demand equal money spent is unreasonable now though. As long as schools don't immediately drop all of their women's sports I don't see the need for it.

Title IX is federal law (not NCAA) so leaving the NCAA has no bearing on it.
