Yes, clean house and that would include the big12 caliber players who don't buy into a big12 caliber work ethic. They hurt the team more than the lower talent guy who is all in all the time. The latter turns into Naz Long after 3-4 yrs.
Instill a team culture equivalent to CMC.
Hire an assistant who can develop reliable post player presence. It's been a long time since Hogue was out there getting 90% of the 50/50 balls.
....and dribbling
And ensure all staff know the goal as tall as possible without falling overMinimize clone cone lines.
Aka Scott DrewA coach that stressing defense and attention to details. Things like boxing out for rebounds, valuing the ball, and teaching TEAM basketball, not a group of 5 individuals out on the floor. Tired of seeing our current players who seem to care more about getting theirs than the team winning.
Also can find someone that can play the 4 and 5 positions that have some bulk, even if it takes a couple of years for them to see the floor. Always have 3 or 4 guys like that on the roster, a few Jared Holman types that can take up space, rebound and hold their own on the offensive side of the floor.
Here’s my take on what the new coach needs to do in the near term to have any success next year and to start turning the program around.
- keep Foster and Tyrese Hunter
- develop Conditt as much as possible for his final season (I think he stays and can play at a much higher level)
- make Hunter the starting PG from day one and move Bolton to the 3rd guard position
- bring in 2 shooters at off guard; one starter and one off the bench (hard to do this late but there will be players in the portal)
- keep Johnson and bring him off the bench with tight reins (no perimeter shots and aimless dribbling). Just slash and crash the offensive glass.
- instill discipline and toughness (perhaps Prohm’s biggest weakness is that he is pillow soft; my knees are shot anyway so I would give my left leg for Jamie and Leath to have hired Chris Beard 6 years ago)
I think a starting lineup of Hunter, Bolton, Foster, Hinton and a reliable shooting guard has a chance, with Conditt and Johnson off the bench in a targeted role. Another reliable outside shooter off the bench would really help. If the new coach can establish that as the core I don’t know where any of the other returning players fit. Maybe Walker as a backup PG.
Recruit and coach good. Hmmmm. So crazy it just might work!Hire someone that can recruit 4 star players and also develop them. I’ve seen enough of these kid’s potential be wasted.
Ball movement and something resembling an offensive strategy/identity would be great. Iso dribbling going nowhere and jacking up a contested deep three with 2 on the shot clock doesn't cut it.I'd like a team that dribbles less actually. Look not there? Swing the ball back around.
Something I'd like to see is a coach recognizing or acknowledging strengths, then utilizing those from the get go.
What the hell happened to Javan Johnson? At Troy he shot 44% and 35% from 3. This year he shot 27%. I had high hopes for him.
