My annual reminder for those in pain and pointing fingers.

Our coaches don’t swing between COTY candidates to sucking on a game by game basis in MBB and FB. They are great, and way too much is put on Xs and Os daily.

People really need to come to terms with the fact that we can compete with anybody and get a great starting five every year, but with NIL, anything beyond starters will always be a big drop off. Especially with regards to scorers or skill position that are going for the price of 50% of our entire athletic NIL.

That means you have little to no margin for injuries, slumps, etc. You will have years where it’s enough and goes well (ie FB 20) and others when not with the same roster and schedule (ie FB 21).

That is the same for football.

It has been this way forever, but amplified by magnitudes with NIL. We can win championships, but there is never room for error or injury, or even a dud star.
I think people who are old enough to remember our first real NCAA tournament and our first bowl game in years and years really appreciate where we are as an athletic department, and I get that younger fans don't have that context.

Maybe a bit off topic:

I feel there needs to be NIL spending restrictions. As it stands now, the players have 100% of the leverage in negotiating NIL deals. This is leading to the haves vs the have nots. And it will be TERRIBLE for college sports. Players are essentially unrestricted free agents each off season. Some players will simply go to whatever school will pay them the most.

Niang alluded to this earlier this weekend in an interview. He basically said rookies come into the league not understanding they can’t get what they want and they have to work hard to move up the ranks. The kids are so used to just having all the bargaining power in college. If a rookie doesn’t like the pay, the team will say, “fine… we will find someone else then”

NIL needs to be regulated. It’s 1) creating great unbalancing in the major sports and 2) enabling kids thinking they can get whatever and whenever they want, leaving them unprepared for when they leave college

Until things change, this unbalancing in the major sports will only continue to widen

I don't really see how NIL has changed much of anything... in the end we've always been and will continue to be a program (both in football and basketball) that relies on finding undervalued players and/or having better coaching/player development. Our ceiling has not changed from history, which is probably a conference championship in football and a final four/championship game in basketball.

Everything is getting more expensive, and people have to choose where to direct their dollars. I think we will continue to see non-donor sections filling up with folks that can’t or won’t donate enough to the Cyclone Club, not to mention giving money to the NIL.

Higher tickets, parking and CC dues are enough for many, with no guarantee that NIL donations will pay off. We Will might be more like We Can’t.
