Punt Blocking

I don't understand why we didn't try to block a single punt all season long. The coaches send 3-5 guys to run 5 yards past the line of scrimmage and then just stand there and not attempt to block it, then run back to try and block. What's the point of this?

Especially today when the score was 27-13 with about 3 or 4 minutes left and Rutgers was punting inside their own 20. Why not try an all out block? Instead we did the usual half *** run a few yards past the line and stand there. End result was still no blocking for the punt returner, Horne, who just fair caught the ball.

We are averaging a mere 7.6 yards a return and have zero punt returns for TD's. I wouldn't deem that very successful. Obviously there were bigger problems today then just this. I've just been frustrated by this strategy all year and especially today with our backs against the wall.

Maybe our coaches don't want to risk a "roughing the punter" call. With our lack of discipline at times, we might have seen a few of those this year had we gone after every punt.

Think how bad we must be at blocks then. When have we ever been good at blocking punts?

I guess you could be right about that. I just can't remember the last time we went after a punt so I don't know if we are bad at it. Seemed like a better option to me today though given our mediocre punt return game.

Talking about punt blocking... We (Rutgers) were actually VERY close to blocking at least 2 of your punts in this bowl game... Probably need to speed that up for next year. We had GOOD penetration on your punting unit on most punts (we are notorious for blocking punts and FGs).
