I've noticed in the last couple weeks that CPR and even coach Sturdy have commented on how Lanning has rushed a few passes, wrong foot, tries to strong arm it sometimes....yes he does those things but as a HC wouldn't It be best to address those imperfections in private? It just feels like we've had serious regression of our QBs lately and let's be honest QBs are fairly fragile mentally at times as they take all the credit and all the blame. I'm not saying JL is fragile just in general. It's like publicly talking about missing free throws. Wouldn't it be best to just let JL do his thing and correct things in private...last thing I want is for JL to start thinking too hard. That's why SR is sitting.

I'm not going to disagree with you, but was he specifically asked about said issues?

If he dances around the question you'll have just as many people saying he has no clue how to fix it.

In fact, in the post game radio show with Heft, Lanning himself pointed out these problems and said he needs to work on them.

That means the CPR Mind **** is already in effect!!!!!

I think that JL and CPR have a secret agreement that CPR can blast him in the media, but he really gives him non-stop praise in private, just to rile fans. They are both Ankeny boys, you know.

Ya, I think the idea that the coaching staff messes up all the QB's by over coaching them is pretty half baked. They all know when they throw a crappy pass.

Sam is just not very good under pressure, and at ISU there is always going to be a lot of pressure. Plus, Sam has been the starter at ISU for most of 3 years now and teams have really figured out his tendencies and weaknesses, so he is easier to defend.

Joel Lanning acknowledges the same things and has said as such. And that he needs to continue to improve. I would find it more troubling if Lanning thought he didn't need to work to improve because we just shut out Texas. And if CPR and Sturdy felt the same way. I thought there was a good balance of praise and also that more improvement can be made.

Lots of negativity on these boards at times. For those that concerned about what our players think, perhaps they should STFU. Just in case they read that crap.

Hey even Tom Brady makes mistakes sometimes and I'm sure he's the first one that points them out. You can always get better.

You're right, cause if CPR doesn't say anything about it then we all know there'd be a forum post titled "The Coaches don't know he makes bad throws" or some such idiocy. It's nice to know that we continue the pattern of "you just can't win"

Ive been wondering the same thing. Is it an iowa state thing or is it normal for the coaches to be as available as they are. Between the pr show. The call in show interviews after practice. Is it maybe something we should limit a bit more?

If he's saying things to the media that he never told Joel he needs to work on then there may be a problem. Anything beyond that, I can't imagine him being, what, offended? by.

I have also wondered what is the right level of program transparency. As a fan I love hearing from the coaches so often, but I can imagine they get tired of everyone wanting a personal explanation for every play call or depth chart move they disagreed with.

It depends on the program. For example I follow Oregon Football on facebook and they have reports during practice and after practice with coaches and players. Nebraska used to do this too, there would be a radio reporter who would talk to the coach during practice.

The one thing Joel has going for him is that his "misses" are low -- which is good for two reasons, 1) they will never get picked off. It's a perfect place to miss if you're going to miss. 2) this is a simple mechanical fix -- his elbow is dropping, he just needs to keep the elbow up and the ball won't die as quickly.

Now if he was throwing some high, some low, some left, some wobbly, I would be concerned. As he gets more reps the game will start to slow down and he'll realize he doesn't need to rush his release as much.

Sounds like a fair assessment to me. Lanning can make a few adjustments to improve. He was short on quite a few of his throws where the receiver was open. At least he is throwing it to a spot where only our receiver can get to it.

Lanning doesn't strike me as an emotionally fragile guy. I was chuckling at his post game Texas comments of "just another game." Reminded me of Jamal Tinsley's "just another gym" comment.

I am more interested how he reacts after making a big mistake (red zone int or pick six). My guess is he's the kind that has a short memory and will want to compete again. He seems to like the bright lights. That's what you need in a QB.

I'm glad CPR doesn't screw around and tells it like it is. JL went about 50% on the day, and I'm glad they know how to fix it.

If he hadn't said anything, sure as **** people on here would be upset about CPR being "clueless" or "naive" or something.

I pity the d-back that takes the first once back on him, good chance:

a. He is gonna get trucked the next play and/or repeatedly throughout the game just because
b. He is gonna get killed during the play when Lanning tackles him.

Joel reminds me of ben Rothkesberger demeanor. Sam R reminds me of Sam Bradford demeanor.
