Wow. Am I to assume KJ wouldn't hire him to a full-time paid position here?

The quote from Bono certainly stands out:

"You will not find a person more respected in our sport than Jon Reader," Bono added.

While I'm sure we'd love to have him, we've already got several middleweight coaches. Our need for lightweights is much, much stronger than our need for another middleweight, even somebody like Reader.

I think Angel was a bigger addition, but would have loved to have Jon back with CWC.

I am curious if Jon still has dreams of Rio, because I don't see the workout partners that Jon needs at SDSU. The best guys are 149 & 157 (Pack & Kocer)

I'm pretty disappointed to see Jon leave. IMO he should be the top assistant at Iowa State. Even if he is still competing.

When will our new coach be announced?

I have always thought that having both Paulsons at ISU (in paid positions) comes at too high of a cost. This could be that case in point.

Are we passing on passionate coaches? Just asking.

If the choice was between him and Angel then our need for a lightweight guy outweighed the positives of bringing Reader back. We can't have all our coaches in the same weight range, even if they are successful and passionate about ISU.

Exactly. It would be like Rhoads having 3 RB coaches instead of 1 QB, 1 RB and 1 WR coach.

Stop with the logic, just fire KJ

This is true, but that wasn't the only option. IMO it would have been better for the long term at Iowa State to have Reader and Escobedo than Paulson and Escobedo.

Travis has been doing a tremendous job with the guys he works out. The middle to upper weights has been the brightest spot in our line-up. I hope he sticks around for awhile!

I think the Paulsons are extremely undervalued at Iowa State. They are more important part of our upper weight success than most give them credit for.

With KJ and both Paulsons eating up so much coaching space (at the staff and CWC levels), we should in fact be performing better at the upper weights. Losing Nickerson and replacing him with the other Paulson doesn't bring much added value, IMO.

I would have rather seen Angel as the assistant coach rather than going all in on the Paulsens, I agree with you on that. But I'm not sure what you are getting at with saying we should be performing better at those weights. For the top half of the lineup in the past two years...

165: AA/AA
174: R12/R12
184: DNQ/Qualifier
197: AA/AA
HWT: AA/DNQ

And for this upcoming season I think we're all expecting at least 3 AAs and a good shot at 2 finalists. Again, I don't disagree that our coaches should be more spread out and I think that would have a net benefit to the team. But our upperweights have performed extremely well lately. There's only maybe 2-3 teams with a better run at those weight classes in the past few years, especially compared to where guys were ranked as recruits.

I don't think we can use recruiting rankings at the upper weights. The track record for predicting success at that size is terrible. The better athletes that are less skilled often rise to the top like Gadsen, who was pretty evidently the best recruit at that weight when he graduated. Rarely do guys like Varner come around that are blessed with so much athleticism and technical ability that they are can't miss. They usually turn out like McIntosh, good, but not living up to the hype. He was the top recruit in his class, but obviously not a David Taylor.

ISU in the past before Sanderson, did great work at the lower weights. We have the talent there in Meeks, Hall, Moreno, Larson, and Briceno. These lower weight guys can excel with good coaching. I am hoping Escobedo gives them that. Call me less excited about the Paulsen hire. I don't think he brings anything we do not already have.

I think some are thinking a little too hard about how much our coaches weigh. I understand that it might be most ideal to have them spread out, but there are way more important things. They are way more than just grappling partners for the guys. The Paulsons have been exceptional coaches and putting them both into paid positions is going to keep them here for awhile. I'm excited.
