This needs to be a sticky on the front page. The new president is probably the most important decision for ISU for the next decade and possibly forever for ISU athletics. Everyone needs to leave feedback on this IMO.

The new president needs to continue the view that ISU is a flagship university for the state, and not a branch of the university of iowa as some would have it.

I hate bumping...but I feel similarly to CyForPresident and feel everyone needs to get there opinion in. This decision is the most important one affecting Iowa State since President Geoffroy was chosen.

Posted my reply, highly recommend that everyone post their thoughts on the issue. Here's what I put:

"The next ISU president needs to focus on both academics and athletics. The budget cuts to the university are getting ridiculous, class sizes keep shrinking and the diversity of classes that ISU students expect keep dwindling, despite our tuition going up progressively each semester. This cannot keep happening, as students will not be able to keep overachieving to maintain this high ranking and many may choose another university due to the rising cost to attend ISU. He also needs to view ISU as a flagship university for this state, not as a subsidiary of the University of Iowa.

Also, this past summer we saw the importance of having a top-tier athletic program with University of Nebraska-Lincoln joining the Big Ten, despite a lack of high academic standing compared to other universities, including our own. Luckily, President Geoffroy has always been a staunch supporter of athletics and we need his successor to do the same. With success in athletics, we breed increased university attendance numbers and increased revenues that help the athletic department and the student-athletes it supports."

I was lucky enough to have President Geoffroy over for dinner on Monday night and pick his brain for almost an hour. Iowa State will be missing a great individual when he steps down, and I am glad he was the President during my time as a student at ISU.

BUMP...

Since I posted 2 hours ago, there's been 2 more responses... I would have to think that a number of people posting on this site have some opinion on who will run this university.

Well I posted my long-winded opinion on what qualities the new university president should possess.

Edit: As I think about my submitted opinion, I forgot about the importance of team building skills to facilitate ISU's further advancement academically and athletically. The new president needs to have that quality in spades in order to accomplish anything at ISU.

Oops.

When is Geoffroy stepping down? Was this formerly announced?

Thanks. Living out of state now and must of missed that.

Here's mine:

"A lot of people (including prospective students) associate athletic success with academic prestige. Athletic success can breed academic success like no other program with the influx of media coverage, public interest, and revenue. The new president must recognize this and continue to seek athletic accomplishments at the highest level.

Academically, ISU needs to find and succeed at their niche. We like to think of ourselves as a great science and engineering school, but does anyone outside of ISU think of us that way? In my experiences with others outside of Iowa, not necessarily. In my opinion, if other dime a dozen degree programs need to be downsized to bring our "niche" programs to the elite level (agriculture, engineering, architecture, etc.), then so be it."

I agree that input from alums and students is very important in selecting our next president but in my mind, no one is more qualified to provide valuable guidance in this than President Geoffroy. How much input will he provide and will he be part of the interviews and selection process? The man has done wonders for ISU in his tenure and it is obvious that ISU's success is very important to him. I hope he is given as strong a voice as anyone as we go forward in finding his replacement.

One thing I would like to see is more distance learning from ISU. Iowa State has been a little too brick and mortar in the past and has been very resistant to the online programs. I think ISU doesn't want to sell themselves out like the University of Phoenix and has been resistant because of that, but I do think the birth place of the computer should be able to find a happy medium.
