Didn't he just take a new coaching job, somewhere in Texas?

He did, I’m not sure if he’d back out of it if Campbell was interested. But he seems as though he’ll be a good coach.

I'd love to get whoever would be the best recruiter they can get. And if I had to pick one certain area, that would be STL area. So many studs there and we have never recruited there until now. Mix that area in with our Ohio and Michigan connections and that would be ideal IMO.

Turnover is going to happen with this relatively young staff, if we can keep CMC, Heacock, and Manning together we will be okay.

From the outside, I would think that working with CMC would be challenging and fun!

Sure glad that ISU signed almost their whole class in the early signing period. It would suck to lose one of those guys that wanted to follow him in February.

The flipside of this - coaches should have to be accountable for leaving a program AFTER the early signing period. If your going to make the kids accountable to their commitment, need the same from the coaches.

Edit - this isn't so much about Ayeni... moreso coaches in general - especially with the new early signing period.

Reggie Mitchell is another name that's available. Was at Arkansas for 2 seasons under Bielema and wasn't retained during the coaching change. Has a long coaching career: KU, Illinois, Michigan State, and Minnesota

Link to his bio on Arkansas web site. Here are some quotes from that bio:

Over his career, Mitchell has coached or recruited 33 players that have been selected in the NFL Draft, including six first round picks.

...

Under Mitchell’s guidance, Kansas running back James Sims completed his career third on the KU all-time rushing chart with 3,592 yards and 34 touchdowns. He became the first player in Kansas history to rush for back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons (2012-13), highlighted by leading the Big 12 in rush yards per game (112.6) in 2012.

...

Prior to returning to Kansas, Mitchell was the assistant head coach/recruiting coordinator/running backs coach at Illinois (2005-09). He spent five years in Champaign, Ill., helping the Illini win Big Ten rushing titles in 2006 and 2007, while the offense recorded consecutive seasons with 5,000 yards of total offense. The 2006 Illini led the Big Ten and ranked 10th in the NCAA with 188.8 rushing yards per game while the 2009 squad was 18th nationally at over 200 yards per contest on the ground.

Hadn't thought of this, and I totally agree.

Anthony Johnson was the guy who replaced Ayeni at Toledo as RB coach. Left to be the RB coach on Charlie Strong's staff in 2016 in Texas where he played, and wasn't retained when Herman took over. Strong retained former NFL QB Shaun King who was the QB coach at USF at the time as the RB coach. I don't think Johnson coached this past season from what I could find.

The Cincinnati RB coach could a top choice as well. Personally I would pick up the former running back coaches from Arkansas or Nebraska

Is it unusual for a defensive back to become such a good running backs coach? Although I suppose that someone who can hit like Ayeni in the video in this thread has a thing or two to teach running backs.

He played running back through most of college but moved to safety his senior year.

Not exactly sure.
I'm more nervous when its a coordinator position that leaves. Position coaches are easier to find than solid coordinators IMO.

Coincidentally, I will be going to Evanston tomorrow. Maybe I should try to find Coach Ayeni and get the inside story. Yeah, right.
