I think most fans are overestimating the impact Lipsey, Eli King, and Watson will have. Only 3 true freshmen in the Big 12 got consistent playing time last season (Hunter, Kendall Brown, Sochan). Those last two guys are NBA 1st rounders if they both declare. The league has become a veterans/experienced players league. You need grown men, and there will be huge adjustment periods for all 3 freshmen next season. If we want to make a leap, those guys need competition at their position. Look at Kansas. They had three top-100 guys come in last summer, and all 3 barely played the entire tourney run.

So just assume all 3 might struggle to contribute and Lipsey/King won't really play much at PG. Hunter is our starting PG, it looks like Jeremiah Williams might be a combo guard, and we should grab another combo guard. When Baylor won it all in 2021, they had 4 point guards/combo guards in their rotation in Butler, Mitchell, Teague, and Flagler. Every tournament, people talk about teams with good guard play will have an advantage. You can never have too many.
That Baylor guard court was lights out, especially on defense.

Where are all these fans posting this overestimating? I truly haven't seen it but I keep hearing about it?

We need threats to break down the defense from every position.

Think of how easy we were to guard this year. Now get more guys that can get out and lead the break. Also to break down defenses in the half court, and get to the rim, to get good looks for themselves and their teammates

We get enough of those guys, and we probably won’t set anymore records for lowest points scored at home
Couldn’t agree more.
It’s only an issue if you have multiple guys fighting to have the ball and to be “the guy”, if if they are all 6’0” and can only defend the pg.

Judging by this player’s low usage and 3P shooting, he’s comfortable being tertiary. Williams says all the right things and can defend 3 spots. And we know TJ is looking for guys that prioritize the cultural aspects.

When we run the offense through two 6’10” centers at the high post, we score 50 points a game. If we ran the offense through 3 athletic guards that can distribute, we might score 80!

I think an interesting indicator about TJ's preferred style of play is that Iowa State was 15th in assists per field goal last season, per Kenpom. And that was with really only one player, Tyrese, who has really good playmaking instincts. If the offense this year is any indication, the ball will be in a lot of different players' hands. When it is, it's nice to have a lot of different guys who who can make the right pass, whether off of a pick and roll or a cross court pass to take advantage of rotations.

With that, plus the struggles against ball pressure, in both ball handling and passing, I get the look at point guards and other guys who have a lot of assists.

Best ISU team (99-00) basically had 3 PGs starting with two legit 3 point threats.

Sign me up to watch that.
Different era, but I'd take it. I remember thinking Fizer wasn't a threat, but he was 36% that year on 42 attempts. That's better than Williams.

Can you have too many guards that can play pg? I'm surprised that's still a thing.

One year ago, Baylor won the the national title with:

Jared Butler, 6'3"
MaCio Teague, 6'4" (transfer from UNC Ashville)
Davion Mitchell, 6'0" (transfer from Auburn)
Adam Flagler, 6'3" (transfer from Presbyterian)
LJ Cryer, 6'1"

This year, they could have been a Cryer and Tchamwa Tchatchoua injuries away from maybe repeating, with:

James Akinjo, 6'1" (transfer from GT, Zona)
Adam Flagler, 6'3"
LJ Cryer, 6'1"

*that 2020-21 backcourt was the most insane shooting I've ever watched. 45%, 43%,42%, 40%, and 36% on 3P shooting. Add in Mayer, a 6'9" G/F at 40%. Just crazy.

Okay, so we are after two guys from Morehead State, right? This guard and a post player that everyone else in the country is after? I don't remember Morehead State in the NCAAs. How did everyone miss on the big guy?

Recruiting is a numbers game, we might need to target 10-15 guys to get 3 or 4. So many schools going after a small group of Big12 level players

Could also mean we are going to see more guys leave- I don't believe Gabe & Tristan have said they are coming back. Although Tristan doesn't really have to as an underclassman.

A big and a wing high volume & high make% 3 pt shooter are big needs to fill out the roster. If the guard/wing is a high assist guy, awesome.

With the right bigs you can have multiple point guards easily.

Good question. Broome was very good as a freshman. Maybe he didn't play AAU? He transferred to Tampa Catholic for his last two years, but his team made it to state, I believe.

Remember the too frequent bad lazy passes this year leading to dunks.
