Google Eric Davis, their 4-star Michigan pg recruit. He was quoted as saying he had just talked to Barnes on the phone yesterday and Barnes said he would be coaching at Texas next season. Interesting. But maybe Barnes thought he was going to work it out. Who knows?

@GoodmanESPN: Texas top candidates are Gregg Marshall and Shaka Smart -- and both have heavy interest in the opening, sources told ESPN.

I'd take Gregg Marshall over Shaka personally.

Whoever it is, hopefully they turn Texas into a power house. Beating them has already lost its edge, and the more potential teams to take down KU every year, the better.

I go after the best if I'm the Longhorn AD

If I am the UT AD, I don't start with Smart or Marshall. The following might be longshots, but I go after a top head coach who might be looking for a new challenge. My top guys in no order would be:

  • Tom Izzo
  • Sean Miller
  • Jay Wright
  • Billy Donovan

Added the Franwich since he fits the bill. Managed to do something the hoks haven't been able to do in a decade and a half, probably looking for a new challenge.

Interesting... Of course not sure UT has interest in Lucas. Could affect the Chieck recruitment.

@EvanDaniels: Source tells Scout that John Lucas has interest in the Texas job. Could be interesting ... Thon Maker would be a lock for Texas.

Barnes dissed the Cyclones after the Cyclones won their second straight conference title (2000-01 season). Never liked him. I hope Texas hires Isiah Thomas as their new head coach.

Lots and lots of smoke around MVC circles that Marshall is gone and taking Ron Baker with him as a grad transfer.

Thon Maker also goes to UT. Wichita was in his final 5.

I've been in Austin this week, and talk has been that Billy Donovan would come to UT for the right price. Things have gone stale in Florida, similar to what we see with Stoops at OU or Ferentz at Iowa in football.

I flew over Texas this week. Luckily did not have to land anywhere. From what I saw, Isiah Thomas would be the perfect fit for them.

Zero chance on Izzo or Miller. That's a step down from Michigan State and Arizona down to Texas. And I don't see Wright or Donovan leaving their schools for Texas. The only school I see Donovan leaving Florida for is Kentucky. I think it goes to whoever wants it between Smart and Marshall.

I am sure the Texas fans feel that way but I doubt if Donovan feels that way.

Stale? 3 Elite 8s and a Final Four the last 5 years.
