His teams were a blast to watch. Btw he sued the ncaa and won. Thats at the very least made me like him. Also i am not sure if you can call unlv coaches cheats. The boosters are the problem. It just trickles down to the coach.

I still think the '90-'91 UNLV team was the best basketball team in the last 30 years even though they didn't win the title.

How ironic that he just died. I was thinking about his teams while reading the posts about teams with bad defensive efficiencies making the final four. UNLV used to give up layups at times to get the game speed up where they wanted it. I doubt they had any sort of good defensive efficiency and I believe his teams made the final four about 4 times.

I loved watching UNLV blast Duke for the title in 1990. The regional final win (131-101 over Loyola-Marymount) was fun to watch as well.

W/L record of 35-5 followed up by 34-1. Not too shabby Tark.

Upon Tarkanian’s retirement, Jim Calhoun, Connecticut’s future Hall of Fame coach, called Tarkanian “one of the best teachers of defense in the last 25 to 30 years of basketball.” NY Times

Yeah I would bet they had pretty good defensive efficiency numbers, they turned teams over like crazy and giving up 80-90 points isn't a lot when you consider they had enough possessions to score 110-120.

I'm sure he saw some pretty crazy stuff in his time

There's some pretty good conspiracy theories out there regarding the Vegas casinos, university administrators and the NCAA working together to try to get Tark out of UNLV. Until the early 2000's, UNLV games were off the board in Vegas. So anytime UNLV was going to the Final Four or Championship game, the casinos couldn't take wagers on those, they also couldn't take any future wagers on the entire tournament if UNLV was involved. As the casinos became more corporate owned during the 1980's, they didn't have the same local pride in UNLV's success and there was a lot of incentive for them to try and push Tark out.

Also, loved how UNLV was originally banned from post season play for the 1990-91 season but Tark got it pushed out until the following season by basically telling the NCAA, we won the title last year, all my guys are coming back, we're going to run the table this year, and you can ban us but everyone knows the tournament will be a joke. And the NCAA gave in.

College basketball was so much better in the late 80's early 90's than it is today.
