He better get the starting job going forward. His progressions were great, has excellent touch on the short throws (biggest skill needed to succeed in a Campbell offense) and the missed long balls to Noel were close and I believe he will be able to hit some of them moving forward. Even Purdy, the best QB in ISU history, wasn't great at those and usually underthrew those types of throws but he was often throwing to an NFL-level, big body receiver that could come back to the ball and box out the DB. Showed great evasiveness in the pocket on the one or two times he needed to show it with a Purdy-esque high step over a would be large sack.

Not saying he's a world beater but if given the starting job full time he will improve as the season goes forward. I believe that with him as the starter we can place top half of the Big 12, especially with how this weekend's games played out for many of the other teams in the league.

I feel like any fan would have walked away thinking he is the clear #1, so unless the coaches are seeing something totally different in practice I can't see why they would continue sharing snaps.

JJ looked like a true freshman, and that's okay. In a perfect world Rocco plays well and efficient, JJ plays 4 games to get experience and redshirt.

Being in the program for a year is a big advantage for Rocco. And I'm assuming his HS competition in Florida was much better than the CIML.

10-13 with 2 TDs and zero picks is about as good as you can play. He looks more ready than Kohl at the moment. Next Saturday will tell us a lot more.

The first couple deep balls were into the wind. I guess the TD was too. I thought the 1st deep ball was a heck of a throw; just barely out of reach, and sometimes it almost looks like Noel slows up if he doesn’t think he can get it.

The TD pass was sick. Not a crazy difficult throw but a perfect ball nonetheless.

He did everything you could ask of him for a RS Fr in week 1. But a lot of bigger tests coming up, starting this week. He looked like a guy who might be a great fit for this team. Just stay calm and protect the ball, let the D put you in good positions.

It'll piss the off "play calling sucks!!!!" crowd, but it'll give this team a pretty good chance in the big 12.

I was encouraged seeing the TE's so involved. If Rocco can be more patient and work through progressions better than HD did last year, it gives us a higher ceiling with our D

Purdy didn’t get his first snaps until several weeks into the season, and didn’t get meaningful snaps until OSU halfway through the season.

If they look equal in practice that gives me a lot of hope for JJ, those problems will go away with experience. Hopefully they keep getting chances to put him in for a few drives.

Maybe Campbell declaring a QB battle was a tactical move. You get all you can get and more in practice when a player believes the competition is neck and neck with you.

Rocco looked smart, mobile, and accurate. The three things this offense really needs. Hope those who are high on him now don’t dump on him when he goes through his growing pains against P5 defenses
