I don't know him at all, but wasn't that impressed with how he came across, honestly.

When I was a kid at his wrestling camps while he was coaching at Iowa I was pretty enthralled by his intensity the handful of times he coached me...that's a youth camp. That would have been about 30 years ago when he was in his early 40s.

I went to John Smith's camps too and while I tried to emulate Smith's technique as a wrestler and Smith was just as accomplished...there was a noticeable difference in terms of the presence in a room.

Maybe I'm getting too PC for my own liking.

Just some things like saying he preferred the "good ole days" in reference to his dad getting arrested for the night & shooting pool with the cops after beating up his mom....and stating he helped wrestlers get home from the bar so they wouldn't get in trouble, etc. I'm not done with the interview yet, but I don't come away thinking "wow, he's a top notch guy."

I haven't listened to it yet, but, ya know, even the best of men aren't saints. If you admire accomplishment, Gable is right at the top.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about him that would put this in the cave.

There is no doubt that during his coaching years at Iowa he was as good at what he did as anybody has been. It was mesmerizing to be around that program at that time and around him, certain types of ISU fans might not like to hear that but it's just the truth. I had a VHS tape showing Iowa's practices, I think produced by Asics, that I watched over and over again as a kid training in the 80s and 90s.

I had John Smith tapes and went to his camps too. His techniques are what I actually used to get an edge. Gable's style did not fit my strengths the way Smith's did, but I watched that Gable/Iowa VHS tape for inspiration and it always ended with me going out and training like a madman.

Gotta say, my Dad and I didn't give a crap whatsoever about wrestling but as a pretty young kid a have memories of my Dad taking me to things where the Iowa coaches Fry, Davis, etc. would go around the state and do little quick talks to raise money. He made sure to take me to one when Gable was going to be there because he was just so interesting to hear talk.

I heard an interview with him on another podcast a while back. I have to admit I didn't really know that much about him, including his sister's murder.

I think what I came out of hearing a long interview with Gable thinking is that people are pretty damn complicated. There's some things you can take from people that have accomplished a lot like him, both positive things to emulate and negative things to avoid.

That sort of thing happened a lot of places back in the day. Step 1 was to tell the teammates to get the guy home. Step 2 was a phone call to the coach. Citation/arrest was like step 4 or 5.

He wasn't condoning spousal abuse. He was just being honest about how life was for a lot of people in the 50's 60's, especially in rough towns. Good old days can be good or bad IMO. I think Gable was saying that too, he just thinks the good outweighed the bad. I can totally see a 9 year old Gable doing what he did to the Cop's son too. Lol.... One of the rare Rogan interviews where he doesn't talk the majority of the time. He was really tuned in to Gable.

Very cool this interview took place.
I haven’t listened yet so maybe the info is in there but I would love to know how in the hell this even got set up and happened. It seems like two completely differently kinds of people to say the least.

Dan wants to be an ambassador for wrestling so I'd be surprised if there were many shows he wouldn't do. I presume a lot of Rogan's listeners are into MMA like he is and it's likely most of them know who Dan is. I don't think it's surprising that it happened. Really, Dan would be good interview for just about any show based on his remarkable collegiate, Olympic, and coaching career.

I think Rogan was a wrestler growing up so appreciates the sport.

Dan and a lot of his wrestlers were regular attendees at weekend keg parties at a Johnson County farm house back in the day.

The guys putting them on were trying to make money off it.
The hogs and turkeys that were served were always stolen (once in the while the beer was).
Drugs were everywhere, of course.
Not top notch molder of young men stuff.

People **** on Rogan a lot. Some of his takes are bad, particularly on covid and masking up. But he has a pretty good variety of guests and he is a pretty decent interviewer when he isn't completely baked.

He had Andrew Yang on there before he was popular,Elon Musk, and lot of others.

This one was ok. Didn't know much about Gable going into it.

Or exactly like it was when Gable was a student at ISU. There was always scuttlebutt about their drunken brawling but nothing hit the papers till Chuck Jean and some other wrestler thought it would be cool to get drunk and wrestle a penned deer at Ledges State Park on a dare, and killing it with a knife. And later cooking and eating it at a kegger. Also a lot of tension and some fights between the wrestlers and the football players that, IIRC, were racially related. Not good times at all.

Pretty good summary of what kind of ******** we used to have at ISU when I was in school:
