Texas A&M has decided to fire football Mike Sherman but has not yet notified him, a prominent Aggie source just told me.

kbohls kbohls
A&M would owe Mike Sherman between $3M-$5M because he didn't sign his extension contract, the Aggie source says.

Aggies will fire Sherman either tonight or Friday morning

From yesterday:

A&M officials mum on Sherman's future | AggieSports.com | Bryan/College Station, TX

"I've been talking to [athletic director] Bill Byrne for the last couple weeks," A&M President R. Bowen Loftin said Tuesday after serving as guest speaker at the women's basketball luncheon. "We're thinking hard about [the season and the future]."

Loftin said that "the athletic director evaluates coaches after every season," and that "there is no timetable on when a decision will be made."

"the athletic director evaluates coaches after every season

Has that ever been said and then the guy keeps his job? never. That is code for he is gone once we find out how much we owe him and if anyone else is interested in our job.

This is a lot more likely than Mack Brown.

I saw our friend Brent Zwerneman said yesterday or today it was 50-50. The last time I saw him throw out 50-50 odds it was on A&M to SEC. Guess we know which way a 50-50 decision goes for the Ags. They like change and like to pass the blame for lack of success.

Colin C on ESPN SN hinted at the same thing today -- but it's anyone's (good) guess. I could not care less. A&M is in the SEC.

Next coach can start his countdown clock of getting fired with A&M fans getting restless with all the SEC losses piling up.

Loftin and Byrne are such puppets. aTm has the #6 recruiting class right now, I wonder how that will play out if they can the entire staff this late in the year.

Coach Sherman has apparently come off the road (no longer making in-house visits). Texas A&M is now in the market for a new head man.

Lots to say about this later on twitter and @texags but I'll begin with this: There's not a better man in coaching than Mike Sherman...

billyliucci Billy Liucci*...and I have to believe he'll be on an NFL sideline as early as next season - as an OC or head coach.

billyliucci Billy Liucci
The A&M program is in so much better shape today than it was four years ago, it's not even worthy of debate. The next coach will inherit...

billyliucci Billy Liucci
...a very stable situation. As reported by @kbohls, UH's Kevin Sumlin the primary candidate ... with Kirby Smart and Charlie Strong in mix

Based on what I've felt from outset, A&M has ONE candidate they felt was the answer and they could get QUICKLY or they don't make this move

Loftin is running this more than you would guess. Byrne was put in the handicap bus by Loftin this summer in order to get the SEC deal done.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Byrne gone too.

Sherman went on the road today to inform their 4* QB recruit he was out and keep him committed to A&M:

The one thing I love about him is he said, "Matt, A&M is a great place and I still think you should go there and do great things" a true man

Coach Sherman just almost brought me to tears. I love that man.
