We did this years ago. Have a battery box with a couple Optimas for our (non RV) tailgate.

Way back in 2004, I used a battery with power inverter to power a receiver. Non-rv tailgates really don't need generators.

I’m an RV moron but camping/backpacking gear nerd. It seems like the tech is rapidly improving in most metrics. Probably someday the generator noise issue at tailgates will solve itself is my guess.

The units I’m thinking of can’t be bigger or heavier than a generator but maybe they don’t get job done or maybe the hardware costs 3x.

Easier coming from a older person

"Hey there you are, what's going on? I asked you to hold my wife's twisted tea while she took the kids to the restroom. Well now she's back and we need you back over here to continue to watch the kids"
Sounds like a good, honest approach to the situation. Do you do taxes too? ;)

I would say the cost is the factor right now. I run a small fish finder on my kayak all day and the battery I use is a Lithium Iron Phosphate. It’s about half the weight of a lead acid, but it was about 3x the cost. It really wouldn’t be that hard to build a decent bank of them though, to run a tailgate and I can’t imagine they’d weigh much more than a generator if not less.

And actually, compared to a legitimate quiet generator, like a Honda, the battery bank might be a better deal. Maybe it’s just proving there is a market for it.

When we had our RV parked in D4 we had a lot more stop in and have a beer traffic from friends that tailgate with other groups in the Hilton lots. Being out in RV village put an end to the quick beer traffic. I didn’t like that. Everything else is awesome
Which spot? Sure several of us would stop by and help you with your excess beer!:jimlad:

Does anyone know what the large grass area is for at the entrance to the bridge? Future bathrooms?

If parked on far east side, are shuttles provided to get old people into stadium? Its at least a mile walk!

How long until generators are displaced by portable battery units anyway? Kind of surprised it’s still an issue. I’m more of a backpacker and light camper so I don’t need it but I am always seeing big batteries for camping life when I shop for gear. Are they more expensive or can’t do the job?

That's a tricky question as the answer depends heavily on how you use it. I too come from more of a back packing type style of camping and my little battery pack works great for charging my headlamps, GPS, etc. When I'm car camping I always have a battery jump pack that works for larger devices and can obviously jump a car battery should someone run that too low (came in handy after a sub zero camping trip at 11k feet and the engine needed a little boost to turn over). My buddy has a nice camper with solar/battery set up and he can usually run 4 days or so without having to run the generator. However, things like his stove are gas.

The point is, what are you trying to do with the electricity? Power some LED lights and radio, no problem at all. Run heaters/AC or electric griddles and other high wattage appliances...then you can drain those batteries pretty quick.

Seems a little dramatic. Not much different from the old RV lots depending on where your seats are.

We thought it was great. Power worked perfect. Less congestion. Friendly neighbors. Really great experience.

We said multiple times how "quiet" it was. Obviously still have all the tailgate noise, which is welcomed, but no generators really was a game changer.

Definitely less foot traffic, but we were ok with that. We had an absolute blast and cannot wait to get back.

We were in D3 previously and we did some mapping and calculated our walk was about 0.11 miles further from the new spot at RV location 617. (From 0.3 to 0.41 miles). Not a huge difference, but at halftime, that might mean one less (insert beverage of choice here).

Overall, my experience was similar to others. The sites are great and they are drastically quieter, and I felt we had plenty of space. But it's not the same. Felt like we were in a bit of a bubble with less walking trffic around us. We will need to expand our friendship with more of our new neighbors and I'm sure it will feel even better.

Quick pic of our setup, of which I'm not the owner, just the abuser. ISU Camper-2022.jpg

I found out someone that I haven't seen in a long time has a spot in the new RV Village so next home game I plan to make a walk over and visit. Works out better for me actually because we tailgate in G4/G5 and in Vet Med years before that and it was always a pain to walk to see friends in the donor lots north of Jack Trice. Now with the bridge across the creek it's a quick walk over to the RVs so hoping I figure out who else I know over there and can make a few visits this season.

Are fire pits such as a solo stove permitted in the RV Village?
They say in the rules that open flames are not allowed. However, I see people with fires every weekend. We are bringing our solo stove this weekend.
