Season of hype is almost over.

After the end of each fall season, the hype talk starts up with the new recruiting class and how this new class is better than last season. Then comes spring practice with the talk of the improvement individual players are making and how good some of them look in scrimages. Summer rolls around and practice starts. Most of the talk I hear is best case scenario, how many wins, bowl games, and yards for Warren and Lazard. The problem is that the best case scenario rarely happens. As an example, most people expect that Warren and Lazard will have better years this year than last year. While both players have put in the work to continue to show improvement, the rest of the team has changed. Last year the OL started the season with more than 70 games of starting experience at ISU. This years OL has just 1 game of starting experience at ISU. Additionally, 3 of the OL on the depth chart are true or redshirt freshmen. The youth and inexperience of the OL may not allow Warren and Lazard to put up bigger numbers. The hype ends this Saturday and reality begins. I along with all other Cyclone fans want them to do well this year, but after closely following them since 1971, I have learned not to get too excited before the season begins.

Man, you really nailed it when talking about all the hype being best case scenario. The hype is thrown at fans by the media and coaches at all the schools. When the hype does not come to fruition the authors cannot understand why fans are disappointed and angry. It took my a long time to adopt a wait and see attitude. I remember well when K-State was 0-whatever-1, the hype was still there. To this day, I will not make preseason predictions.

Because none of us know what happens every year? Let the hype train roll on and the dissapointment will sink in naturally.

Way up there
I get that we lost a lot on the oline but hasn't depth at that position been a weakness for years? It's the same "hot take" that "fans" have been bringing for years. Sammy got excused from every mistake he made, the oline was his patsy for 4 years. Even despite all of theses concerns, both Warren and Lazard had good seasons last year.

Expecting a dropoff makes the assumption that last year's OL was a "best case scenario", it was a patchwork group of guys, who due to injuries played different positions and kind of bloated the number of starts stat, guys may have started but they didn't have experience playing as a unit in the positions they were playing at the start of last year. I don't get how a position group that everyone blamed for the offense struggling the last few years, is all of the sudden irreplaceable.

I still remember the post some guy sent to CW admonishing him for getting his hopes up either last year or two years ago. I guess CW should just say we are going to suck and let the team prove him wrong.
