SEC Basketball

SEC might only get Florida and Kentucky into the tournament this year. Rest of that league is BAD. Georgia is in 3rd place and they went 6-6 in non-con with losses to Georgia Tech, Davidson, Temple, Nebraska, George Washington and Colorado. After them, there are SEVEN teams at 7-7. Many mediocre teams in a mediocre conference. Any loss in that league other than KY or FLA is a bad loss.

Missouri was one of the best teams in the Big 12 the year they left and now they are just a middle of the road team in SEC. They would probably finish 9th in the Big 12 if they were in it this year.

SEC sucks. It's funny how missery fans expected their basketball to run the tables in the SEC but they are mediocre at best now.

A (now former) colleague of mine and I looked at this last week. I was proud to see ISU at #3 in the Big 12 (with an inside track to pass Texas for #2 before the end of the year). He saw UGA was #3 in the SEC and was really excited about it. Then I had to point out that, if you ranked the two leagues, you'd probably have...

9. West Virginia
10. Baylor
11. Texas Tech
12. Georgia
...bunch of iffy, won't-make-the-dance SEC schools

...the truly awful SEC teams like USC

Our ninth team is easily, WAY better than their third. 90% of our conference, with only the tomato can of TCU to spoil the meal.

I would rank KU and UF pretty close to each other, too (some advantage to Florida) and ISU and Texas pretty closet to UK (actually a push there between the three).

We wondered if it had to do with the football "dominance" of the SEC (which I would debate given how awful the bottom of that conference can be, but that's another story). Recruits want go to schools to be "the guy," not in the shadow of a football program. Hence why there was an inverse relationship between the quality of the football team and the basketball program at many schools (KU and ISU being really good basketball schools in the 1980s and 1990s in the old Big 8, awful at football, reverse the situation for Oklahoma and Nebraska).
