Should you have to be “knowledgeable” to be considered a fan?

Would you call someone who knows nothing about their team a good fan? A fanatic?

I'm in no position to judge others. I'm sure other people have found my level of "fandom" to be overbearing at times. I welcome all fans of Iowa State, regardless of their knowledge.

When did I ever say we exclude people? I simply said if you want to be a GOOD fan then you are knowledgeable.

Yes - if they show up/pay, cheer, and don’t cause a scene... They are a “good” fan in my book.
That's fine but I guess I don't know why someone would invest all that money and time if they didn't pay attention?

My soon to be wife is a perfect example of this. She invest money into clothes, tickets, donations, ISU travel... To be apart of something my family, friends, and I like to do.

It's all just semantics anyways. Not really sure why you took exception to what I said I wasn't trying to call anyone out. People can do whatever they want with their money and with the case of your wife I don't know that I would call her a fanatic but like I said I'm not trying to exclude people from participating.

I think we’ve all had an experience where we get into an argument or debate with a fan who knows absolutely nothing about the team. Whether it be basketball, football, etc..

And this leads me to my question. Should these “fans” even be considered fans of their team? The loud mouths who can’t even name the starting running back or quarterback of their team. Shouldn’t fans be halfway knowledgeable about their team before they start talking?
A fan can have as much or as little knowledge of their team that they feel they want to. People can be whatever type and intensity of a fan that works for them. It's silly to attempt to place some sort of valuation on their fandom level and is only done by other fans who find enjoyment in being competitive about their fandom. Not everyone feels the same way.

I have a few friends, mostly women but there is one guy in particular that I have in mind, that know very little about the Hawks besides that their colors are black and yellow and KF is their coach. They will be the first to give me hell if ISU loses or will act like huge fans when Iowa beat ISU. If Iowa loses then they just magically "don't even care that much". That's the only fandom that really annoys me
1. Please refer to KF as the Moon Family Head Football Coach KF because it's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard that is football-related (and there's a lot of dumb football-related stuff).
2. I could probably be accused of saying, "I don't care that much" when ISU loses. I'm far from the best fan.

My career field is the only subject I’m focused on becoming an expert in.

For my teams, I do my best to stay informed on how they’re doing and knowledgeable of the history, just so I can go in depth when talking with someone.

I will admit my knowledge of ISU is much more in depth than my pro teams

I would argue that the people that attend the games and cheering, may be paying more attention than the ones that are at the games with their noses buried in their phone all game.

A lot of people make time to go cheer for the team but really don't have the time or inclination to do all the deep dive game stat and recruiting stuff. I appreciate the deep dive stuff that gets posted on CF, but I got by just fine before it and it really doesn't change my enthusiasm for the team.

My wife is an Iowa graduate. I consider her a Hawk fan. She wants them to win. She usually knows one or two players, at most. But we have Iowa State football season tickets, she knows Iowa State players and wears lots of ISU clothing, and not just to games. Also, her son, my stepson, is a huge Husker fan. So we cheer for them too, although I see their teams, coaches, fan base and Athletic Department without the blinders on that plague so many of them.

But I guess as far as the original question, I think a fan can be anyone with any level of interest or knowledge. Just wanting a team to win is enough.
