Iowa State Compliance wants everyone to know : "NCAA bylaws prohibit the use of any student-athlete's name, picture, or likeness for promotional purposes. This includes the use of names of current student-athletes on t-shirts (like those listed below and for sale elsewhere). Selling these shirts could render student-athletes ineligible."

That only has to do with sale though correct? Somebody could theoretically make multiple shirts with his name on them and give them away without making a profit, and that would be fine. I could be wrong, but that is how I understand it.

This is BS. Iowa has had multiple McNutt shirts (admittedly most of them are pretty funny), UNI has the basketball big heads, along with multiple other schools. **** it, just make shirts anyways.

Thats kinda what I thought too, but who is going to spend $500+ on shirts to just give them away?

So glad that the NCAA was so interested in EA Sports before they started making stupid "tweaks" to players in NCAA Football, like giving Adam Robinson dreads, Matthew Stafford a d-lineman facemask, etc.

I seem to remember RB#5 for USC looking just like Reggie Bush, and he was a dominant player in the game.

Another thought. If the person selling these t-shirts isn't affiliated with the University then how in the world can they punish Steele Jantz for that.

Exactly, if that were the case, you'd see people pose as a fan of the opposing team and start selling shirts with some player's name on it.

Makes perfect sense considering Iowa fans were sporting shirts like these for the last 4 years....

Also the infamous "We are going to McNutt in your face" shirts as well. Apparently the hoks didn't get the memo that this is an NCAA violation.

I'm no lawyer, but I think the "for promotional purposes" is the key part here. I would guess that you are allowed to do it if you are NOT affiliated with the university.

I do not see how the NCAA could prohibit Joe Q Public from making any shirt he wanted promoting it and selling it. There is this thing called freedom of expression.
If the University or a player profits from the sale that is a different matter and I think it would fall under the NCAA jurisdiction.
