Somebody is walking by and spitting on my dog

I have a Rott/Lab mix dog who’s about 10 months old. Never could get her to go poop on a leash, so I put her out on a tie-down in the fenced front yard every morning and then again around dinner time. It gives her a chance to do some running around and do her business with some privacy.

About a half dozen times in the last month, when I’ve gone out to bring her back in, I’ve noticed spit or a loogie on her, usually on her face. Tonight it was on her back.

After the second time, my fiancée called the local police department and they said they wouldn’t do anything about it even if we had it on video. I put up a camera anyway, but it goes off for every little movement and the batteries died pretty quickly. I didn’t bother to replace them given what the cops said, but after tonight I’m just fed up. The spit had brown in it like the person was eating chocolate or something.

I’m going to replace the batteries and watch when she’s out from now on, but how should I handle it if I catch someone in the act? What would you do?

I'm guessing chew. Watch out the window and if you catch them doing it put a pellet gun shot into them won't hurt them but will let them know you don't want them messing with your dog.

What city/town do you live in?

Catch them, beat the hell out of them and then spit on them.

dog-eye boogers:
"Dark red/brown eye stains: These stains are often seen in dogs that have chronic tearing due to the structure of their eye socket or a blocked tear duct. The staining is due to porphyrin, a compound found in tears that turns red/brown when exposed to oxygen."

IDK, ignore it and go on with your life. Your dog certainly doesn't care if you are even right about what you think. If it is someone doing this, it is probably because they have had a bad experience with this type of dog. A little girl in our neighborhood was mauled by a rot last year in her own front yard. The owner, another neighbor, was walking it and it got off the leash and immediately ran off and bit the 6-year-old girl, who was getting out of a car in her driveway with her dad, in the head. Nearly scalped her. It took another neighbor, a retired sheriff, to put pressure on animal control to do anything.

There is a 99% chance that if was was CERTAIN who it was doing it, they would get a big loogie right in their face followed by asking if they like it done to them.

Does your dog bark all the time when you let it out? Does it chase after people walking by and scare the life out of them? If so, then I’m with the spitter.
I mean, it seems unlikely that there’s a person doing this. Imagining “Welp, he’s got his dog out again. I better get over there so I can spit on it”. No one does that. Unless your dog is really annoying them on a daily basis.

Wait for them next time if you can and then go spit in their face.

If law enforcement doesn’t want to deal with it take it into your own hands.

I was going to say something similar.

When you put your dog outside, watch him/her when they are out and see if anyone approaches. If they do and you see them spit or abuse your dog, confront the person. Once you do that, they probably wouldn't do it again since they got caught.

What a weird comment. Imagine someone spitting on you and you ask them why and they say someone that looked like you did something to me once and then saying oh ok, no worries I'll just carry on with life. Very strange.

Not exactly sure.
Do you have a back yard?
Yeah, put them in the backyard for a week or so and see if he/she still has them. It will tell you if it's a person or something from the animal. Remember, a lot of dogs will eat their own poop if they are left to their own for awhile. They can do dumb things.

In the OP, there is mention of batteries running out on the recording equipment. Use a device that can be plugged in. Get the evidence that you need.
