Not exactly sure.
I was confused. Showed up knowing nothing, wish I knew it wasn't the 8th episode. I was thinking i knew some of this stuff (not a diligent follower). Especially when the last scene happened and when vader showed up.

I think these non-episode movies will be for people who are bigger fans of the series themselves and know more about some back stories. They are probably a little more fan service then they are in attracting new viewers to the Star Wars universe. I knew going in to the movie where this story took place in the timeline, but if you are not an above average Star Wars fan who keeps up to date on this stuff, I can see where you can get lost.

That was the biggest thing. I've seen all but 2 and 3. I didn't know this was a stand alone and like an info support movie. I thought it was #8 so I was really trying to piece things together.

If you missed episode 3 (Revenge of the Sith); there was at least one character who was kind of important (but also small role) that you wouldn't have realized. Don't want to give it away, but it is one of the rebel political leaders during that big meeting they had, more importantly, the conversation he had with the women political leader.

To the people complaining about lack of character development I think you are overthinking it all. This is a one off movie with one off characters who are only important to the story being told on the screen. Their role in capturing the death star plans is the only thing you really need to know. We are never going to see these characters in another Star Wars movie again. So I'm cool with the lack of character development in this situation.

Saw this Saturday night and I really liked it. I thought it was a good example of taking a small part of the original trilogy and telling a good story that made sense and fit in with the overall universe. As opposed to the prequels which were a jumbled mess. A few thoughts on characters:

Jyn was a good main character, about what I expected.
I really liked Cassian. From the trailers it seemed like he would be a goody goody character, but in the movie he was definitely not.
K2SO was great, just wish he would have called someone a meatbag as a little fan service for KOTOR fans.
All of Darth Vader's scenes were awesome. I really liked the ending scene and how they kept his fighting style very similar to how he was in ESB. I was worried they'd go the prequel route with his fighting.
The two CGI characters were BAAAD. Tarkin was on screen enough that it became just okay, but Leia at the end was just terrible. I don't know how video games can have such convincing character models but movies fail terribly at it, maybe its because there are live actors on screen to compare against. I'm curious if they did them as just straight up CGI, it looked like it. I'd have thought it'd be better to get look-a-likes and then use CGI to make slight modifications. I don't know how they can do a movie like Benjamin Button and have it be convincing and then something like this fails so bad when its for a movie franchise that's known for pushing the envelope on special effects.

My wife was a Star Wars virgin before we met. She hadn't seen ANY of the movies. I got her caught up before we saw episode 7.

I made sure to let her know that Rogue One was a prequel to episode 4. Does that make it episode 3.5?
If she didn't know that, she would have been confused too. I'm proud of her though. She did catch a lot of the little hints and cameos from the main trilogies.

When Bail Organa said he was returning to Alderaan, my wife said, "Bad idea."

I don't think she caught Cornelius Evazan and Ponda Baba in their cameo though.

She did have one wild theory about three quarters of the way through the movie that I found humerous, "What if Rey is Cassian and Jyn's daughter?" At the end of the movie I jokingly responded, "Probably not honey."

Tarkin's CGI was actually really great. It fooled my wife as she didn't remember him from the original trilogy. Leia just looked terrible. I wonder if it helped that Tarkin's scenes were all in darker areas, so it wasn't as obvious. Leia looking terrible and being the last thing you see in the movie kind of sucked.

I would have rather they showed a double of Leia from behind with the white hood up, then had her pull down the hood to reveal the trademark hair buns. Give her the same dialogue, but just not show her face. It would have worked well as a teaser to what we saw in episode 4.

Tarkin had such a big role that I'm less surprised they used so much of him.

I thought they were developed quite well in the whirlwind adventure that it had to be just to get it all in.
Though I do have one complaint. They didn't do a good job introducing the characters. I didn't catch Chirrut Imwe or Baze Malbus' names at all during the movie and I really liked their characters.

Yeah, they would have been better off just showing Leia from behind.

Some discussion here of differences between trailers and final version...

http://www.slashfilm.com/rogue-one-missing-trailer-footage/

I hate to say it, but I thought the Jyn of the trailers (pre-reshoots and editing) looked more interesting than the Jyn we ended up getting (post-reshoots and editing). They essentially ended up taking all her edge away which is a lot of why she was imprisoned in the first place. Shoot, her famous "I rebel" line from the trailers didn't even end up in the movie.

Oh and you are right. Video came CGI looks so good because it is not directly compared to actual human beings.

I think they did a lot of Benjamin Button's effects with a combination of practical effects and CGI, so it blended better. You also weren't comparing any of it to your memory of actual people, like we did with Tarkin and episode 4 Leia.

Absolutely fantastic film that services fans and the general public. Fills in plot holes from ANH perfectly. Explains the thermal exhaust port weakness, why the rebels are short on fighters and have to use inexperienced farm boys, how Princess Organa got the plans etc etc. People who complain about the score must remember John Williams is upper 80s in age and composing ep VIII. Asking someone that old to compose two Star Wars pics back to back is a bit much.

Good point about the lack of fighters and pilots.

I said to my brother after the movie, "Looks like they're going to need a new Red 5!"

I thought overall the CGI characters were good. They were a little jerky/shaky, but if you think about it, compared to where we were in the prequels, CGI has really advanced. In the Force Awakens, some of the background characters walking around were entirely GGI. The difference is that the two characters in Rouge One were seen up close and next to real humans. The difference is not that much if you think about it.

Also, is it a requirement, in every Star Wars movie, to have one chubby rebel pilot? At least this one's name wasn't Porkins.

The fact that they didn't have Porkins in the main space battle is a huge miss IMO. It was awesome how they included Red Leader and Gold Leader using old footage from ANH.

I also loved how the fact that Galen designed the Death Star flaw changed a perception of ANH and the Empire that people had for 40 years. Would have been cool to have a neat little role for Porkins to add another element to him other than the joke he is in ANH. Might have been a little too much fan service though.

Did any of the ships successfully jump to hyperspace after the space battle before the last star destroyer ship showed up?
