I was confused. Showed up knowing nothing, wish I knew it wasn't the 8th episode. I was thinking i knew some of this stuff (not a diligent follower). Especially when the last scene happened and when vader showed up.
Some discussion here of differences between trailers and final version...

I think these non-episode movies will be for people who are bigger fans of the series themselves and know more about some back stories. They are probably a little more fan service then they are in attracting new viewers to the Star Wars universe. I knew going in to the movie where this story took place in the timeline, but if you are not an above average Star Wars fan who keeps up to date on this stuff, I can see where you can get lost.
That was the biggest thing. I've seen all but 2 and 3. I didn't know this was a stand alone and like an info support movie. I thought it was #8 so I was really trying to piece things together.

Saw this Saturday night and I really liked it. I thought it was a good example of taking a small part of the original trilogy and telling a good story that made sense and fit in with the overall universe. As opposed to the prequels which were a jumbled mess. A few thoughts on characters:
Jyn was a good main character, about what I expected.
I really liked Cassian. From the trailers it seemed like he would be a goody goody character, but in the movie he was definitely not.
K2SO was great, just wish he would have called someone a meatbag as a little fan service for KOTOR fans.
All of Darth Vader's scenes were awesome. I really liked the ending scene and how they kept his fighting style very similar to how he was in ESB. I was worried they'd go the prequel route with his fighting.
The two CGI characters were BAAAD. Tarkin was on screen enough that it became just okay, but Leia at the end was just terrible. I don't know how video games can have such convincing character models but movies fail terribly at it, maybe its because there are live actors on screen to compare against. I'm curious if they did them as just straight up CGI, it looked like it. I'd have thought it'd be better to get look-a-likes and then use CGI to make slight modifications. I don't know how they can do a movie like Benjamin Button and have it be convincing and then something like this fails so bad when its for a movie franchise that's known for pushing the envelope on special effects.
To the people complaining about lack of character development I think you are overthinking it all. This is a one off movie with one off characters who are only important to the story being told on the screen. Their role in capturing the death star plans is the only thing you really need to know. We are never going to see these characters in another Star Wars movie again. So I'm cool with the lack of character development in this situation.
Tarkin's CGI was actually really great. It fooled my wife as she didn't remember him from the original trilogy. Leia just looked terrible. I wonder if it helped that Tarkin's scenes were all in darker areas, so it wasn't as obvious. Leia looking terrible and being the last thing you see in the movie kind of sucked.
I would have rather they showed a double of Leia from behind with the white hood up, then had her pull down the hood to reveal the trademark hair buns. Give her the same dialogue, but just not show her face. It would have worked well as a teaser to what we saw in episode 4.
Tarkin had such a big role that I'm less surprised they used so much of him.

Absolutely fantastic film that services fans and the general public. Fills in plot holes from ANH perfectly. Explains the thermal exhaust port weakness, why the rebels are short on fighters and have to use inexperienced farm boys, how Princess Organa got the plans etc etc. People who complain about the score must remember John Williams is upper 80s in age and composing ep VIII. Asking someone that old to compose two Star Wars pics back to back is a bit much.
Also, is it a requirement, in every Star Wars movie, to have one chubby rebel pilot? At least this one's name wasn't Porkins.
Yeah, they would have been better off just showing Leia from behind.
