If there was absolutely any possible way that students could be allowed to "camp" inside the Scheman, that would be the obvious best system available. Have security work in shifts so that someone is always there to make sure there isn't any trespassing and vandalizing going on. Have the designated line of campers run in a certain shape to keep things in order. When time comes to let the students into Hilton, have staffers there to be sure that the line remains orderly on the walk to Hilton.

Obviously this is NEVER going to happen for about a million reasons. But that's my dream scenario. A lottery system is terrible for those who actually care about the team and a merit system would be unfair to the younger students who still pour their heart and soul into the program. As it stands, camping will continue to happen (I personally love what it does from a publicity standpoint, and while I hate the blatant budging, that would happen anyway). I would guess that the university just takes steps to ban certain items, like heaters, in order to discourage such large numbers of students from camping.

Yes, this would never happen. Allowing students to camp inside Scheman would place greater responsibility on the university for the safety of students. Besides, I think Scheman often has other events going on. Sometimes the day of games, the day before games etc. Wedding receptions, conferences etc.

Now, how much fun it would be to sit next to one of this tent campers in class is another story...

I know students who have to pay for apartment water, so the only time they shower is at State Gym or when they bum water at a friend's place. Yes, they came to shower at son's place once when we were there. Kind of disturbing. I guess is gives them a few bucks more for booze?

One of my roommates always showered at State too. Though we were sharing one bathroom for 6 of us.

How about this?

Set times to check the line. On the first day (or first check of the first day), you register in order whoever is line associated with the tents. Have a limit per tent. And register according to student ID. Then, do random checks to make sure that a minimum of that group is there. On later checks, register whoever has joined the line. Again with limits on the number of people per tent. And again using student IDs.

Because registration is tied to student IDs, then you have a way to control the line. You might even tie the registration into the ticket/ID scanning process.

So, Cynado, you are another one of the thoughtful veterans of this. What do you think of my suggestion above?

Question for students just trying to get in:

How soon before the game does a student have to show up just to get in the doors? Not to sit in the front row, or anything, but just to get in and get a seat. 24 hours? 2 hours? 1 hour? 5 minutes?

My daughter has a student ticket, but she is not even going to try to go to the game monday because she is sure she won't even get in unless she is camped out for a couple days.

Weren't those students with the ice fishing hut out there for like 2-3 days by themselves? How many people are out there now?

That's simply not true. Last year for Kansas, 3 hours gave you a guaranteed seat probably in the lower level. With lower success sooner to tip off. They don't turn away that many people.

Here's the SW corner by the ticket office about a half hour ago:

Niang's freshman year (year of the blarge) I showed up I believe 2 hours before the doors opened? I ended up being one of the last few people let into the arena. I was given a ticket that went unsold and actually sat in the upper deck outside of the student section. 3 hours before doors open and she would have solid chance of getting in.

This simply isn't true. Last years KU game is irrelevant. Seats were reserved ahead of time because of college game day.

Edit: Maybe I showed up 2 hours before tip. I don't remember for sure. I must be getting old ;)

I like the idea of having a capacity associated with each tent. We always crammed a large amount of people in ours, but for groups like that a second tent is always a possible solution. Keeping track of total students per tent would in theory benefit the department by allowing them to keep track of how long the line has become, and help students who don't plan to camp out have an idea of how early they need to be there on gameday.

Let's say in theory each tent has a lead representative. Their purpose is to be there for the first check-in, and they can be the contact if any dispute is going on about line positioning. That tent is then assigned some sort of designation, whether the representative's last name, their numerical position, something along those lines. The department staffer then marks down, on whatever record keeping item they choose, that "Tent Cynado" is in position #8, and has registered the maximum number of 10 students. Does the staffer then give the tent 10 "tickets" marking their position in line? Just thinking out loud here.

On Monday I got in line at 5:20 and we were halfway up in the upper deck. This is the thing that irritates me. I mean it has been fine but as someone who goes to every game I shouldn't have to worry about just getting in. My friend I usually go with has class that goes till 6:30. I told him he is absolutely going to have to skip it to get in. I'm debating skipping my last class and going over around 3 when I get there from Gerdin.

I get why they oversell the tickets but that creates other problems.

The Iowa game when Gesell missed the free throws, son had a class until three hours before and they let him in but he and many others were sent to stand on the parquet level. Do they still do that or did they decide it was a fire hazard or something?

The problems are far outweighed by having a full student section on a more consistent basis and more ticket income coming into the department. It's unfortunate for those who have required classes or obligations, but it's the nature of the beast. I found myself working ahead on academics in order to allow myself the luxury of skipping classes.

Can we stop pretending like the reason for camping out is to get the best seats? You could camp out just one night or come early the morning of the game and probably get in the 1st or 2nd row. So 4-5 days of camping = 1-2 row improvement in your seats. That is a terrible deal.

The real reason to camp out is to have en excuse to do nothing but tailgate for a few days and the good seats is just an added bonus. That is fine, I would do it too if I could.
Wow, this is so far from the truth. The people who are camped out right now, say their tent is at the south bridge. They will probably get 10th row if they're lucky (non band side). Last year for KU we were 10th row non band and our tent was at the ticket office. Camping out on Sunday night will basically just guarantee you a lower level seat.

Doors will probably open early again on Monday. Last week it was 5pm, so I would assume that again. Id say getting in line at 2:30- 3pm should guarantee a seat

Question from some OOS who has never witnessed the tent camping in person: Where does it "start" and what direction does it go? I see people posting "it's by the ticket office" or "it's by this corner already!" but without any other point of reference.

For some reason I imagine it starting at the base of the east steps next to the south entrance, and heading east toward Elwood and then north to Lincoln Way

It starts just off the base of the steps to the north entrance. Then wraps around Hilton from the west side. So to say that it's at the ticket office is basically to say that it's about 1/3 wrapped around the building.

Starts at the bottom of the stairs on the north side of Hilton, then circles around to NW,W,SW,S,SE, etc....

So are people skipping watching the TCU game just to get better seats for KU? Or did you just use your student loan money to buy a generator and have a big screen going in line? (Not judging)
