Was officiating at Waterloo West last night and they happened to be honoring their 1986 s̶t̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶c̶h̶a̶m̶p̶i̶o̶n̶s̶h̶i̶p̶ team. Got to shake hands and chat with Terry Woods. Looks great and is a very nice man. Can't believe it's been almost 30 years since he was running the court as a Cyclone!

Speaking of Woods there are showing a game from 1989 where they played Kansas on Cyclone.tv. Sam "burger thief" Mack looked good

I graduated with him. Always a nice guy. By the way no state championship that year, even with Chris Gaines (iowa's Mr. Basketball ), Anthony Thomas, Terry Woods and a few more great players on that team. Lost to a Davenport team if I recall correctly.

I highly recommend him if you are looking for someone to work with your son or daughter on their basketball skills. My son took some lessons and he was great to work with, plus he's a Cyclone for gosh sakes!

My bad. I mis-heard the announcement. They were being honored, nonetheless!

I believe they lost to Carroll Kuemper who had UNI-bound Nick Nurse and a big guy named Brian David who I think got a schollie from Lute Olson at Arizona. Was a great championship game.

Woods had a solid career at ISU and if I remember right Chris Gaines may have gone on to become WAC player of the year once or twice at Hawaii. ISU and Iowa both had good talent at the time but I never understood why neither school offered Gaines.

I believe the Waterloo West team that Terry Woods was on won every game they played that year except for the championship game. They had been the number 1 ranked team in the United States by USA Today. I was at the state championship game and seemed to remember whoever touched the ball first across the half court went 1 on 5 against the other team and took the shot. They missed a lot of slams in that game. It was a close loss but if they had played as a team they would have won easily. One of the players went to UNI and was a starter. Terry went to ISU. Chris Gaines went to Hawaii. I thought he just wanted to go to Hawaii. I think several other players on the team played somewhere in college as well.

He was a really good quarterback too.

his center was Kevin Burt...who is an absolutely fantastic musician over in the Iowa city area.
