The Most Important Thing I Saw From the Baylor Game.

My favorite thing was that we didn't take a bunch of bad threes when we got behind by 10+. I only remember one 3PA (Kalscheur from way deep) that didn't seem in the flow of the offense. We trusted what was working (driving and looking for open guys in the paint for those dunks) and worked our way back methodically, then got it out for good threes that we just missed. Against just about any other team, or with a little bit better shooting, that will lead to a lot of wins.
When did this happen?

I have really joined the “I don’t give a rats ass what were ranked” crew. I’m sure we’ll get dropped real bad. Maybe not. Who cares. That’s such a circle jerk of people voting who largely have zero clue what their doing. Just win.

My general take: if ISU is ranked anything at all it means things have gone very well and they're a tourney team and there's really nothing to not like about that.

I thought there was a sequence where Kalscheur missed a 3, we got the rebound and then he took another one from a few feet behind the line and missed. Maybe I'm misremembering?

That happened but the second one was probably a foot behind the line, wide open, and in Rythm.

Fair enough. I probably was just so frustrated with Kalscheur at that point I saw it as worse than it was.

We may just take them down at their place. Over confidence on their part, chip on our shoulder, better shooting. We know our defense isn't going to vanish. It's a crazy game and season.

Very different team since we do play defense, so in saying what I am about to say, I am keeping that in mind. But winning in Waco is a tough ordeal. We’ve had close calls but I think it’s been 8 straight losses down there. And only one win in the last 15 games down there or something like that.

I was at the game; I never got the sense that we were playing well enough to win, but we still fought and had a chance at the end. That'll translate into winning some tough games over the next couple months.

I was there too, I would characterize it differently.

It wasn't that ISU didn't play well enough to win, it was Baylor didn't play badly enough to lose. They really played their "A" game, especially hitting tough clutch shots. They kept ISU at arms length but could not pull away.

If Baylor would have shot poorly, turned it over a few more times, or just generally not been at their best, they lose. Even with ISU shooting blindfolded from 3.

Totally agree. It looked like a #8 team playing a #1 team. We caught them at the top of their game, but still looked like we belonged on the floor with them.

I think when a team loses by five when shooting 1/13 from the three it’s a good indication that that’s a solid team. With our defense we should be in about every game. This team is for real and will be competitive the entire year.

Baylor played like ISU had their full attention. Some of their makes to keep ISU at bay just when it looked like ISU was getting downhill reminded me of Kentucky in the '12 tourney game after Royce's coast to coasts.

CW wrote something like that BU may have been the most talented team he's seen in Hilton...that's probably debatable but really since like KU in the mid-late 90s has there been a crazier roster?

I really think the boneheaded turnovers that led to transition points were more of a problem than the perimeter shooting. ISU gave up a few really easy steals that led to layups or dunks on the other end. If ISU had gotten those cleaned up ISU is in a position to win despite going 1 for 14 from the arc.

Tyrese had a really bad first half + of the game, but played much, much better the last 15 minutes or so. He had some really bad turnovers/forces, especially in the first half.

I'll have to look at that again because I also remember the second one being well behind the arc. I mentioned to Mrs. Velo that he was so wide open he could have taken a dribble and gotten closer to the arc and still been wide open. It was definitely longer than what was wise - especially for someone who is clearly struggling from 3.
