TJ and Ref

No idea, but the 1st couple of yrs quite a few people thought he was to passive with the refs, this yr it seems to be paying off. Maybe refs respond to being respected.
In fairness coaches like Bill Self and Scott Drew who are constantly in the refs ear seem to get "make up" calls or favorable 50/50 calls alot. The past couple of weeks the refs started cracking down on belligerent coaches more, so TJ's calm demeanor has proved beneficial in that aspect. It will be interesting to see if they are more favorable towards ISU going forward.

I was sitting behind the scorers table for the KU game and when TJ and self met at halfcourt before the game self leaned in and whispered something to TJ and they both died laughing. It was definitely something about tang im sure lol.
And it's never been all or nothing.
I think there are times tj could work the refs a bit more. But I also wouldn't want him going full Fran
Those are also coaches with 20+ years in the conference and conference and national championships to back them up. They've put a lot of time in, plus we all know that Bill is the master of getting the T to rally his team. I didn't think Drew got that many Ts but I may be mistaken.
Sportsmanship seems in short supply on some teams, but not State. TJ sets a great example for his players.

I used to be in the ‘coach needs to get T every now and then’ camp or at least chirp at them a bit, but watch how focused this team is with their jobs and not worrying about the refs. They rarely complain about bad calls and just move on to the next play. It’s so impressive how disciplined they are, and TJ exemplifying this same attitude to the officials is leadership by example.
I saw it and I think the ref was Gerry Pollard. Perhaps they were laughing about this incident.
It was a nervous laugh by the ref. TJ told him that the managers who wipe the floor have a video of him pointing to a cheerleader and saying look at the taa taas on her.

This. I could care less about the strategy of "working the refs" compared to the team not spending their time complaining and whining after every foul. It has to be a huge advantage.
And right on cue Bill Self gets a double T and ejected. The smug smirk on his face as he walks off is vomit inducing. It's pretty bad when the announcers say he might be trying to get ejected moments before he gets ejected. Just a bad look if you ask me. That behavior may have been beneficial to them over the past 20 years. Now it's looking more childish and non professional. Give me nonchalant TJ any day over that type of temper tantrum.
Refreshing compared to the circus at EIU.
Wasn't whining after a foul but later in Prohm's tenure at the B12 tournament we make a drive to get the go ahead lay up/dunk flex under the basket OSU fast breaks down to the other end to win the game if I remember right. That was disappointing .
I’ve always been surprised that so few seem to notice, but TJ is constantly in the ear of the ref, but he does so in a way as to not show them up.
He almost never faces them directly when talking, shoulder to shoulder. Lets them keep doing their job, but gets whatever he’s communicating across.

You would think Hoiberg would have gotten calls if this theory was true.
Looks like Iowa has a pretty high FTA per game the last 4-5 seasons:
