Understand the OP's sentiment but recruiting rankings are largely a pile of doggie poo. Obviously a 4 or 5 star has considerable potential, but outside a couple dozen kids each year that are freaks and going to one of the blue bloods, there isn't that much difference between number 50 and number 500 on the rankings. (See Lanning, Rose, Butler, Montgomery, Purdy, etc for examples). I look at like - you have the top 10 classes - Bama, Clemson, OU, tOSU - that will get theirs. Then you have 11-40 that get good enough - for those, it depends on how well the coaches can effectively use the talent. That is why a Boise State, Cincinnati, etc can compete year in, year out.

Long Story, Short -

I am completely comfortable CMC can get us to where we want to be with classes in the 25-40 range.

But also keep in mind Boise and Cincinnati are competing in mid major conferences. They are missing the same thing programs like Iowa State have always missed: depth.

A football season is a long tough grind. Coaches will figure you out. Whatever you were doing in Sept you better have a better plan for November. Teams without depth competing in power 5 conferences might start strong, but almost always fizzle down the stretch for those reasons. Boise never had those circumstances

McCarneys good seasons were a great example. We had some studs! But behind them wasn't much. Better recruiting would have changed things.

Campbell is starting to emerge unlike any of our recent previous coaches in the recruiting rankings and it will Show up on the field. Our down years won't be 2-10 they'll be 6-6 and our ceiling won't be 8-5 it'll be more like 10 wins

Looking at our incoming class and think Campbell is doing a great job bringing kids in.

Having a little trouble with people getting excited about a top 40 recruiting class. I don't think Campbell's goal is to be a top 40 team. I would think his goal is to be top 25 and perhaps top 10.

How can we build a top 10 program if we can't even get in the top 30 of recruiting classes?

I know we develop kids, but it seems like we start from a big hole athletically. How can this be overcome?

I'm reminded of an old recruiting joke. "How do you become a 3-star prospect?" "Be a 4-star prospect from the south and commit to Iowa."

Seriously, there is a major southern bias in the ratings.

Recruiting is improving, the next step is to start getting a larger share of the better instate kids. I know, some will say that it does not matter where they come from, but we have to be equal to Iowa in the recruiting of Iowa kids. If we can improve here, that is a win/win for us, we get better instate kids, and Iowa is weaker for it.

If that is all it takes, I would rather steal OU's recruits.

They don't even need to be from the south. Arnaud dropped to a 3 star after he committed to ISU and he was in our backyard.

*Raises hand*

Just curious...does the OP take selfies while driving?

Sure a conference title or big bowl game/win would be great. But ISU has been really bad at football a lot.

ISU teams hovering around Top 25ish any season is nothing to complain about. Even top 40 is what 7 wins? Fantastic.

He knows players better than recruiting rankings do. I fully trust cmc

One concern I have is that we didn't go after many DT's this year, and didn't sign any. Lima and Johnson are both seniors now and we don't have much depth behind them.
Completely agree...this seems to really be overlooked. I will admit I am not familiar with the depth chart and how young the backups are, but this really concerned me during the recruiting cycle this year.

Not much for “proven” depth, but how proven can the young guys be for being stuck behind two really good DT’s?

Josh Bailey- RS Jr
Tucker Robertson- RS So
Angel Dominguez- RS So
Isaiah Lee- RS Fr

A guy like Enyi can move around in the next two years.

If they plan to continue in the 3 man front, I don’t see an issue. This staff always has a plan.

DT is severely lacking in depth IMO. Lima and Johnson are seniors, and behind them we have Tucker Robertson (RSo), Joshua Bailey (RJr), and Isaiah Lee (RFr), and that's it. I do think Angel Dominguez (RSo) has been moved inside too, but outside of Robertson I haven't heard too many exciting things about any of these guys thus far. I could be wrong on that?

I'm betting CMC and the staff are looking to find another Lima somewhere to bring in as a transfer or JUCO guy.

Isaiah Lee played key snaps against WVU as a true freshman. He will be a good player.

I’m sure they will look to add depth for the 2020 team, but if they plan to stay in the 3 man front, the guys you and I named in the two posts above will be enough depth.

Staff is really high on Isaiah Lee and some other young guys have the potential to move inside. WTS, I think we get 1 or 2 for 2020 class
