The Will Howard USC thing is just weird. So they had a 5 star top rated qb redshirting behind Williams. And now he’s in the portal. Howard is a decent p5 qb but throw away the young talent for a one year rental is insane to me. He’s not going to do anything remotely similar to Williams. I guarantee they’ll have to go get another one next year.
They're just adjusting to the current reality.

If you are a team prepared to pay for results through NIL, a high school recruit just isn't a good investment. Ultimately you'll wind up with a budget for QB's and plan on filling it eveyr year or two.

You just don’t see Bama and UGA have to do that. But if that’s how the other top programs want to play it fine, we can pick up the hs kids.

I think that will be and is being used as a precautionary tale for those with money. Don’t soend it all on 18 year old that could hit or could be a miss.

Use your resources on established guys as a rentals to fill any roster concerns going forward. See what school are currently shopping or shopped for a qb already: Washington (Got Rodgers), Oregon (Gabriel and Moore), USC (Howard), Ohio St, Miami, FSU, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Colorado, and I’m sure I’m missing many more.

Most of those schools have 4* and 5* sitting and waiting but want that 1 year splash.
The jury is out in my opinion on teams that use rentals to build. TCU had great success last year taking a ton of transfers. But struggled this year.

CU and ASU, who both brought in a historic number of transfers this year, finished with 4 and 3 wins, respectively. This pattern continues at the professional level too. Bringing in high profile free agents to build the core of the team has some success (Lebron’s Miami and Laker teams), but also have some spectacular failures (Dallas, Clippers, Nets, Phoenix, etc.)

I think the better strategy is to identify young talent and develop (Golden State, Denver, Milwaukee, Boston with Tatum and Brown, Georgia and Michigan in CFB), and then fill in gaps with a a select few transfers.

Bama brought in 1-2 qbs just last year. Milroe just won the job.

So Dillon Gabriel is off to Oregon and this happened today:

Has there been any 5 star QB not hit the portal in the last year? Lol, this is becoming a race to the bottom of teams shuffling the deck annually. This doesn’t even impact ISU and it frustrates me.

I don't know. What did renting a QB do for ND? Not a whole hell of a lot. Do we really think the Kansas State guy is going to lead USC to a Big 10 title or the playoffs?

USC could have been a playoff team this year had it not been for Alex Grinch

Howard is probably more Jalen Hurts in Riley's system than Caleb Williams.

In the Big10, Howard will be a top 2/3 quarterback.

Strong DE against the run and pass, I like this.

No knock on the guys we have but Defensive End was an underwhelming position for me this year (and most positions outperformed my expectations fyi). Tyler Onyedim brought some juice all year, but not a ton outside of him - and he's more of a DT/DE hybrid.

Really only remaining questions on D are for Vaughn and Tampa. Curious to see if the approach for those spots is in or external. With OuT gone it looks like a wide open conference and we seem to have the pieces in.place to compete with everyone on the schedule.
