UNLV QB is leaving the program immediately due to the school not withholding NIL commitments

We're not far away from multiple star players on the same team holding donors ransom for more payment before they step on the field for a post-season game. It's going to happen somewhere.

"Head coach gets ____ for making the conference championship, so should we"
(insert Stewie Griffen vs Brian - "where's my money" scene)

College sports may be inherently competitive (I'd argue that many other industries are too) but they don't care a lick about competitive balance. The best players go to the best teams, very consistently. There's zero interest in a level playing field among schools, except when it comes to compensation for their labor. Then, suddenly "competitive balance" is imperative. It's an absolute sham. College athletics needs to play by the same rules as everyone else. Nothing about it is so special or sacred to warrant special treatment. It's a money making business, and has been for a long time. All of the NCAA's arguments amount to little more than window dressing.

At the end of the day, the headline here is: "Employee takes better job for more money"
It's not that complicated. Happens every single day in the real world.
No, college sports doesn't need to play by the same rules as everyone else. They need to play by the same rules and protections as any other professional sports league.

We don't get that because Congress refuses to take up the issue of creating an antitrust exception for these sports. Government killed the current enforcement body of keeping up at least the image of a legitimate sports operation and left nothing in its place to be a regulator over the leagues. As an outsider looking in who may want to step into the role of being that entity, I wouldn't take it in its current state either -- government has showed no willingness to the NCAA to budge on regulatory matters. Anything put in front of them is instantly brought down against the NCAA.

I think anything should be fair game. Let’s at least let these kids learn how the real world works. Sometimes you make a bad deal. Sometimes you get stiffed for a job and you have to go to court. Sometimes you don’t get paid on payday and you go back and the doors are closed. Sometimes you get an across the board pay cut. Sometimes your agent steers you in the wrong direction. Deal with it.
It would be nice to actually still have some ISU teams to watch in the near future, but as more and more regulatory meltdowns occur and outside influence comes in, I won't keep my hopes up for that happening.

It'll be great for tOSU and Bama, their finances will love it. Ours won't like watching the product continually degrade in quality, and that seems like a pretty likely thing to happen at this rate.

We can only blame ourselves. This is a society issue. We value money over all.

Sounds like a great agent. Did he get them to pinky swear and make sure they weren’t crossing their fingers behind their back?

So the analogy seems to be the hiring manager inflated expectations at the interview but once he sat with HR there was nothing in his contract of employment. But he agreed to work anyway in hopes it would be later corrected.

Of course, as well as the monied interests of the NCAA creating this environment to begin with (granted, this may always have been the end result in terms of actions taken against them by governments, but still).

UNLV fans and accounts seem to be arguing that he is asking for more money than what was originally agreed upon. The story is he got an Agent after the KU game and someone got into his ear that he is worth more. When he told Odom he was told they weren’t changing the amount.

Saying all that, I am a bit skeptical that many details came out so quickly and it seems like a “story” that might be created up to make UNLV not look bad.

Wonder if we will get the full story some time.
This story is going to be something.

What's interesting...and I think I have this right from CURRENT perspective....but officially any NIL money would be from an outside source, not internal to the university. So UNLV probably can't share much of anything....and who knows, maybe Blum could share but how do we pay? Is it amount split over the year, lump sum, etc?

If it is true he got representation and then wanted more, that will be a total cluster for others who try to do the same. Imagine a 3rd stringer who probably didn't get much money...then by chance gets in there due to injury and does real well.....now what? Hold out until paid? Hold out to transfer. Whew....what a wild world.

I have basically no sympathy for the schools. They have sat silent on the sidelines. They let the situation become ambiguous because they're to afraid of possible negative consequences. Be a leader and take action or you end up with this silly show we have now.

Completely agree. It should be noted that there are some athletes who decide to reinvest their NIL money into the community, such as Rocco

Those are great stories to hear. This UNLV QB story is fascinating, and illustrates that money is the main motivation for many people

They are top 25 in the coaches poll, but you are right they are still a long shot. In the end what matters is the CFP poll and that doesn’t come out for a bit.
If the CFP ranking mirrored the coaches poll they would be in as if today. Only five spots from getting in if mirrored AP poll.

I don't either, if they would just admit what is already obvious (players are getting paid to play, they are employees) they could collectively bargain this stuff. But they won't so we'll go down this road until they lose so many court cases they have no other choice.

It sounds horrible, but I don't blame the player. He won't be in the NFL so his window for making money off his athletic ability closes at the end of the season.

If he could get a one time payout of $500,000 or more from another team for his last year of eligibility he could invest that and be pretty well off down the road.

Here's the type of stuff that scares me. What's to stop Iowa from offering Connor Moberly a half million to transfer to Iowa? Absolutely nothing.

QB is really the only position where Iowa is sorely lacking, and it's the most important position of all. A player like Connor would add two entirely new dimensions to Iowa's offense, a serious down field throwing threat and a serious mobile QB threat. Unlike Mcnamara, he'd be worth every penny.

I tend to agree, he knows he’s not a pro and has 1 year left to make potentially life altering money. It sucks for everyone, but many would do the same thing given the opportunity.
