I felt that pain too. Rice visited at the same time as Lowell Hamilton. IIRC, they were ranked as the #1 and #2 recruits in the country. They came for the Cyclones' preseason scrimmage game that marked the first day of practice, forget what they called it then. Big crowd. Coach Orr got on the P.A. system and announced that one of the assistant coaches was going to enter Hilton through the tunnel, and please give him a very warm welcome. Of course, the coach walked out with Rice and Hamilton. Huge ovation, and they seemed to love it. Johnny thought he had them both.

Then at the last minute, Illinois hired Hamilton's mother, and he wound up going there. Michigan pulled some sleazy under the table sh*t and talked Rice into flipping to them. Johnny seemed to lose his incentive for recruiting after that.

Johnny almost got Willie Burton in that class as well. All conference at Minnesota. Those three in the class after Grayer. That could of been epic.
