I am looking at getting a 2014 Volkswagen CC for my daughter. She get's her School permit in a month. Anyone have any experience with Volkswagen? Do they run well? Break down? Expensive to get worked on? What experience have you had with them?

Thank You

My wife's new VW has a 6 year 72k miles warranty. I wouldn't have bought it without the warranty. So far it's been reliable but it only has 6k miles on it.

We got a 2012 Jetta for my daughter a year ago so we haven't had it all that long but we've had no problems with it to this point. It has a pretty comfortable ride and get's pretty good gas mileage. We've heard they are expensive to get fixed but have had no issues to this point. You are supposed to use only synthetic oil but that's offset by the fact that it doesn't need to be changed as often.

Just one man's opinion: Good performers, safe, below average reliability.

PS: Insurance is going to be VERY expensive. Like, as expensive as the car itself type of expensive.

VW has below average reliability and is expensive to repair. They tend to do some dumb design too...never thought putting the battery under the driver seat was wise. I don't know how they stay in business.

My parents have an older Jetta, mid-00's. My younger siblings have driven it a lot too.

Things have been expensive to fix when it needs it, but is getting close to 350k miles. Fixes have kept it cheaper than having a new car payment, especially considering how long it's been on the road.

Just like @jcyclonee, we bought our youngest daughter a used Jetta some years ago. It ran well, but after a couple years she had some issues with it, and not only were repairs expensive, parts were difficult to locate. (If we lived in Des Moines, or a larger city, we probably wouldn't have that problem.)

I'm in the same position. There is a VW Tiguan at Bob Brown in my price range. I just can't bring myself to consider it though, hard to compete with the reliability of a Toyota of Honda.

Modern VWs, ESPECIALLY TIGUANS, must be serviced at regular intervals. A couple of hundred miles outside the service interval, and you will have one terrible mess to fix. Probably not a wise buy for a young driver unless you can count on them to keep the car serviced and to know the mileage since the last service interval.

Having said that, I do know a mechanic who says that they are very good to work on (not sure if that means he always makes a profit on them, or if they are easy to work on and he can turn them around cheaply).

We're on our third---had a Jetta + Golf turbo deisel. Both great cars. My spouse currently has a GLI sedan (high-end Jetta). Excellent quality that stands up to the several Toyota's we have had in the past.

She only puts 30-40K on each but other VW's with very high mileage run forever if you maintain.

I'd put them up against any domestic sedan in that price range.

I really like my golf. Haven't had any repairs, but only have 15,000 miles on it. IMO, all repairs are expensive if you're paying someone else to do them. I haven't seen that the parts are any more expensive than our Toyota

VWs seem to be a love them or hate them car for most people that own them in my experience.
