I really want my son to see the whole tailgaiting experience. He is already picking out his WVU gear to wear. This will include a coonskin hat.
Drive to the stadium. Enter from the south off RT 30. Park in the SE grass lots. Arrive early and walk around. Wear your WVU gear. Find some ISU fans, strike up a conversation and share the experience. You won't have a problem finding some food and drink.

Be sure to come back here after the game and tell us about your experience at the game, etc.!

This is what I hear. If my family was not with me I would do just that. On this trip I will tailgate hard but not likely long like I used too. I expect a good time. In case you haven't heard us mountaineers know how to have a little fun too. While I cant take credit as I dont go there anymore, WVU has risen back to the top of the party school rankings.
I'm not sure if this is even an answer to your questions, but... Tailgate long and hard. ISU fans know how to tailgate.

Definitely go to Hickory Park. My son is a sophomore and we went there after the first game last year. Kind of tailgated a while after the game and missed a little early rush. Who else was there? Coach Rhoads. My son saw Simon Estes at the Music Building the second day of class, and sat by Coach Hoiberg at church the first time he went in Ames. All in the first two weeks, lol. And had the presidential chopper fly over him on his way to an engineering class today.

I wouldn't worry too much about Thursday in Ames. I know when my boys were that age, they would have been happy sleeping in, eating the turkey somewhere, and watching football at the hotel. I'm guessing Buffalo Wild Wings will be open late afternoon and evening at least and you could watch lots of games there. And you could always walk off the bird on central campus, play some catch if it isn't snowy and play in the snow if it is.

They did a little segment about Hickory Park during our bowl game last year, it is probably on the net.

Thanks for the info. I may take you up on this.
Few hotels even have vans.

You may also want to park north of the stadium around the Hilton Coliseum basketball arena because it is also a public lot. It is fairly easy to get in and out to the north, especially if you are parked north (most of the traffic flows south to 30).

That is where we tailgate. You are welcome to join us. We are a family-oriented tailgate party. And you get to watch the marching band warm up. The close south lots tend to be dominating by drunk college students. The farther south and east lots are more family-friendly. Send me a private message if you want more details. We are excited about being able to play West Virginia every year.

Olde Main is a great microbrewery/dining. Highly recommend you hit there. I'm a big fan of their wheat beer if you want to try a local brew.

Hickory Park after the game...Yes you will wait. However the seating capacity is enormous, so an hour and a half is the longest before you get a table most the time. I haven't gone after a game for years though.

Great Plains Pizza would be a good place for a meal as well. ISU much like I imagine WVU based on the pictures I have seen has a beautiful campus especially in the fall.

We wont get there until late on Wed. We have a suite at the hotel so we can always watch the NFL games in the room on Thurs. I also want my son to get the feel od a real College campus. Not the commuter schools in St. Louis.
Not going to be a ton to do in the area on THursday. Even in Des Moines there is not going to be a ton going on. Love the area, but that is a rough time to visit as far as finding something to do as an out-of-towner

Hickory Park usually does a good job getting people in and out. There may be a crap load of people waiting, with a line out the door, but it isn't as bad as it looks.

Students are on break that week so you won't be able to get the full campus experience. Hope some buildings are open for you at some point. Reiman Gardens are nice. Great murals in the library. They have the first computer stuck in some engineering building. I'm guessing the Union and library will be open at least part of the time, as some students can't go home.

Be careful he might like it so much and that he may want to come back 9 years later.

The Iowa State campus has won numerous awards from Landscaping Architectural organizations. From the ISU website:

AWARDS FOR THE ISU CAMPUS
Thomas Gaines, in The Campus As a Work of Art (1991), proclaimed the Iowa State campus to be one of the twenty-five most beautiful campuses in the country. Gaines noted the park-like expanse of central campus, and the use of trees and shrubbery to draw together Iowa State's varied building architecture.
In 1999 a national landscape architects' group selected Iowa State's central campus as a "medallion" site. The park-like central lawn was among three central campuses selected for special recognition by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).
To commemorate its centennial, the ASLA selected more than 300 significant landscapes across the country as medallion sites. Thirteen sites were on college campuses, but only three are central campus sites - Yale University, the University of Virginia, and Iowa State.
"The sites were selected because they represent places that were to the heart and soul - places landscape architecture had something to do with making them what they are," Dunbar said.
Iowa State's central campus includes 490 acres of trees, plants, and classically designed buildings. The landscape's most dominant feature is the 20-acre central lawn. Over decades, campus buildings, including the Campanile, Beardshear Hall, and Curtiss Hall, circled and preserved the central lawn, creating a space where students study, relax, and socialize. "The grandness of its space created by structures, places, and plant material has been a special place for Iowa State students," Dunbar said.

My son recommends Super Dogs out of some cart in campustown at midnight or so outside of the bars, but I doubt that works with a 9 year old.

Those will also be available in the student tailgating lots.
While the student lot itself isn't a place for families, it would be a nice experience to walk over that way and check out the sights and sounds and grab a Super Dog.
