The score was 28-17 San Diego State with about 70 seconds left. The next five consecutive plays:

Fresno State TD
Fresno State 2 point conversion
Fresno State perfectly executed onside kick
Fresno State TD
San Diego State INT

I remember almost the same scenario happening to us. It was an away game with a MAC school. Very little time left, we were ahead and attempted a field goal which was blocked and returned for a touchdown. The opponent then did an onside kickoff and recovered and scored another touchdown. We lost. I think it was under McCarney. (hazy memory)

EDIT: See the following post by theshadow for the actual last 5 minutes of the game meltdown.

You're thinking Toledo '07 (Chizik), perhaps.

Up 35-24 with 5 minutes left. Toledo returns a KO for a TD (35-30). ISU goes 3-and-out, then a debacle on the punt snap ends up with Toledo recovering the ball in the end zone for another TD (35-36). Then ISU's GW FG was blocked because an OL got destroyed.

That has to be the one reference.

I was scouring archives for road games vs. MAC and I didn't see any in McCarney era, I was going back too far.

Even so, that's 5 minutes vs. 70 seconds, so at least it wasn't THAT bad. Still a bad result/meltdown.

That was brutal. Worst part was that I believe we scored on 4th and Goal from 1 before the kickoff. If we don’t get in, we probably stuff their offense and hold on to win.

We'd need to be up that many with 70 seconds to lose like that. But I certainly remember basketball collapses that would rival that.
For whatever reason, this is the first thing that came to mind. (Caveat: 70 seconds w/ 7-point lead in basketball is a semi-eternity).

You nailed it, that had to be it. My recollection of the ending was way off but it was a crazy ending. That was bad news and unbelievable.
