Can't get this thought out of my head and maybe some of you insiders have some insight.

What if Cam had held on those last 2 seconds vs. Paniro in the wrestle-offs last October? Cam pretty much dominated up until the end. Would Cam be the guy and would PJ be watching instead of being ranked #3 in the country?? Or did the coaching staff know what they had in Paniro & would have been given more chances until he could take the spot?

I think definitely the latter.

However, I can’t say I haven’t thought about this myself several times. Cam dominated their matchup for 6:45. It’s really crazy to think about that now. But, coaches know wrestle offs get weird sometimes. Paniro would have been the guy either way imo.

Also I'm pretty sure Cam and Paniro wrestled multiple times in high school with Cam winning, Cam beat Paniro something like 10-5 at state one year. Cam may just be a bad matchup for Paniro as he is pretty lengthy.

Impossible to know, but would Cam be a top 10 guy if he had the spot? I wasn't too impressed when I saw him a couple times last year but he looks to be much improved this year. Depth is a great thing to have in the room if you can keep everyone around & engaged.

When he’s at 149 I think Cam would be a top 20ish guy. Pretty good depth to have.

157 was too much for him at UNI open.

MED, check out Dresser's 11-minute or so interview at Cyclone wrestling site from the other day, where he talks about changes in Paniro's training since last year,. And, yes, they knew what a talent he was.

It's amazing how winning close matches (like that wrestle off) can build confidence and spring-board a wrestler. Hopefully, PJ can keep winning as the season unfolds and get a top seed in the NCAA's. I do think Cam would be a top 20 guy (if he had won the wrestle off and started the season) and we would probably have seen additional wrestle offs between Cam & PJ in open tourney's much like what we've seen at 157 and 174. Of course if Cam would have beaten Gomez, taken Yanni to OT, and earned a #3 ranking, then there wouldn't be any wrestle off's in that scenario. IF the front guy keeps winning and earns a high ranking then as a coach you have to go with the hot guy that has earned the best seed.
