What is Randy talking about in the 1st paragraph?

Probably one of those classic set-ups he has that end up being nothing by the end of the story.
Headline screams: "Joel Lanning will see the field, but where?". Conclusion at the end of the column "at backup quarterback".
Probably just exactly what he implies. There were other circumstances behind Nick's departure that aren't, and don't necessarily need to be, public.
I am normally very hard on Randy but this time I think it was just a well this is what we know, but everyone knows there is a lot going on behind the scenes. At this point it doesn't matter because he has been dismissed form the team. Don't worry though Randy, you're still my least favorite sports writer.
Fine, then don't say anything at all. But no, instead he wants to insinuate that he knows something just to be an arrogant jerk. Not only that, but he wants to stir up controversy too. I hate that kind of journalism.
I thought that was journalism? At least he didn't use a click-bait article title, and had the decency to save it for the first paragraph.
I read it as "I know some of the things that were involved but there are probably more things that none of us will ever know".
Morris is going to log a TON of minutes this year. I hope he's in good shape or can find some breaks here and there or he is going to be worn down by the end of the season.

Yea I figure some people may feel that way but I was told that Nick stole $400 cash and a pair of Beats Headphones from his teammates and that's why he didn't go on the trip.
