Alot of people questioned why Kerry Wood was named the closer this year. At this point in the year, I'm now wondering why myself. Everyone talked about how bad Dempster was as a closer last year, well Kerry Wood has already blown more saves this year than Dempster did all of last year.

Is it time to move Wood to a set-up role and put Marmol as the closer? I know we've been winning games this year, but I can only imagine how many more games we'd have without Wood as the closer.

Thoughts?

Dempster wasn't a bad closer because he blew saves, he was a bad closer because he allowed WAY too many baserunners. He got very lucky last year he didn't blow more saves. Wood's WHIP is MUCH, MUCH lower than Dempster's was last year. If he would just stop hitting batters, he'd be fine.

Maybe the Cubbies need to turn Wood into some maple bats. :biglaugh:

But seriously, Marmol should be the closer. Marmol has "it" when he's on the mound. With Wood, every time it's holding your breath waiting for something bad to happen.

Last night after Marmol got settled down he was untouchable. Three straight K's and then Lou lets Kerry bring his gas can in for the 9th to light the infield on fire.

Eventually Lou will catch on and make a change. Just hope that the Cubs can at least stay within striking distance for the division until that change is made.

I have been on the Marmol bandwagon since the beginning of the season, and I think he should be closing.

I can understand the argument that many Cubs fan's make that Marmol is valuable coming into the 8th inning runners on first and third nobody out situations that it makes it difficult to move him to the closers role.

When Marmol is on he is absolutely UN-HIT-ABLE. That is the definition of a solid closer in my mind.

With Wood getting the day off, I find myself a little more relaxed with a one-run lead in the bottom of the 9th with Marmol on the mound.

Plus, the runner scored from FIRST on the play (running on contact with 2 out). Brutal.

I'm not sure Marmol is ready to be the closer yet right now actually. He sure struggled to throw strikes in the 9th a few times today. Wood is new to the role, when he's got command of his stuff he's a good fit there. I'm not ready to yank him out of the closer spot at this point. He is not even near the kind of bad and shaky pitching that Gagne and Izzy had when they lost their spots.
