Physicality. People want to claim the traditional post position is dead, and I'm not here to fight that, but size still matters. Look at Gathers and compare him to anyone on our team. They just flat out outmuscled us inside tonight and it killed us on the boards. Their offensive points off second chances was the difference in that game. **** Gathers probably could have outmuscled most of our football team.

I think this is one reason our depth hurts us so bad this year, we really are a small team. It's not even a foul issue as much as just getting worn our by pushing against guys that outweigh you by 30 pounds every night.

For as much **** as the guy took on here, I commend Scott Drew, the guy has really become a helluva coach. No way he beats ISU with this team 3 years ago. Today though, he outcoached ISU. Seems to be happening a lot lately.

Defense

We gave up 94 points to Baylor in Hilton. That is a joke.

The problem is two-fold. First we do a horrible job on high pick and rolls. Second, our post defense isn't physical. Which results in way too many easy shots for opponents. By avoiding foul trouble, we are avoiding playing defense.

Defense and rebounding are typically, the key to winning road games. If we don't improve quick, we could easily go 3-6 on the road.

I also thought Prohm made a substitution bumble today. When we were up by 11 points in the 2nd half Prohm subs out Niang and Nader. Having Cook and Burton on the floor worked OK in the first half, but with momentum in the 2nd half I think Prohm should have subbed one guy at a time.

If those two teams meet three years ago I doubt the outcome is any different.

Drew got better when he started to recruit more than thin big guys. No longer do you see him with teams with only one ball-handler or outside threat with weak big men. We really missed on getting Medford, although you could say that about a lot of guys Fred's last two years.

Defense, depth to some extent, coaching, and maybe a little bit of hustle.

Today Prohm got out coached. Being a good in game coach is important and in these close games it's often the difference between winning and losing. Having one more guy (Naz) would be nice. Although I think we would still see Monte, McKay, and Niang playing the minutes they are now even if we had Naz.

IMO it's kind of a mix of a few. Lack of 3 point shot, Hustle, and the Coaching is not as good (don't get me wrong I like Prohm, but he isn't Fred)

This is the correct answer. We need a PG that can drive and shoot and create when we need it. Both Kane and Tinsley could do that and those where the 2 best ISU teams. MM is a game manager when we need some one who can step up.

The same thing this team has missed for the past two years? Fred wouldn't help any. FFS Fred lost the exact same game, the exact same way to Baylor last year.

This team is missing a 2nd pure shooter. This offensive based team struggles or labors to score at times. That is the same thing that has been missing the last 2 years.

Idk, if you ask the question in March, then maybe I could go there, but not now. Too early to say we're missing Fred as to the reason we've struggled. NOT FAIR to say this soon, imo. Why? Not the same team without Hogue and Naz, and the late hire of our staff almost handcuffed them in getting any available immediate help. As has already been pointed out, last year's coach lost this game, too, as well as UAB (with the whole team healthy, current guys PLUS Naz/BDJ/Hogue. Different than this team.

This team needs ATTITUDE CHANGE - "KILLER INSTINCT", Prom make good adjustments, these seniors have always let off when they get ahead, even under Fred Hoiberg - Hence UAB. I sympathize for Prom. Morris may have scored 21pts, but no dribble penetration - remember Tinsely and DeAndre Kane also, our leaders ship on the floor gets lazy on defense. We miss Longs Leadership.

So.....because we beat (in close games) Colorado, Cincy, Iowa, Texas Tech...then according to you, Prohm has outcoached Tad Boyle, Mick Cronin, Fran McCaffrey, and Tubby Smith. Hmm...not bad actually.

The answer is a guard who can drive the hoop, score against contact, and hit free throws. Or DeAndre Kane.

In a game like this where you are struggling to get open shots and hit them, you need a Kane/Stinson/Tinsley type guy to help you out in the half court. For this team, if Georges isn't facilitating because a defense is keying on him, we are dead meat when we miss shots. You have to have that go-to guard.

I totally agree! every time I see Monte "walking" the ball up court, I know the game is going to be a bad one for us. Today, he was even walking up the court when someone else was bringing up the ball. I don't know if he is sick, hurt, or just bored, but the third (I think) time he did that, I started doing housework. done is done, and he was done.

They're missing the blue-collar, gritty type players. We'll never be a landing spot for McDonalds AA type talent. So, instead, we need kids that play like DeAndre Kane. He played with toughness, grit, and a will to win. I'd take a roster full of those types of kids over those that have "swagger". You don't need swagger. You need confidence and determination.

They treat defense like it's a chore, with the exception of Matt Thomas. He's playing his *** off at both ends of the floor, but he's not a leader. Not yet, anyway. And they have no sense of urgency. Give up an easy bucket? No biggie, we'll get it back at the other end.

It's still too early to give up on this group. There's too much talent and experience there. But one of the seniors or Monte has to give them more on the defensive end. Set an example and the other guys will follow.
