North Carolina vs. Syracuse
The academic fraud semifinals

North Carolina has been found guilty of fraudulently awarding academic credit to HUNDREDS of student-athletes over a period of 18 YEARS in order to keep them academically eligible.

Syracuse was ineligible for post-season play last year, a sanction they imposed on themselves to try to avoid the wrath of the NCAA, and their coach was suspended for 9 games this season.

Yet both of the teams are on center stage playing for a national championship.

The NCAA is so gutless and corrupt that I'm about ready to give up on following college sports.

I'm not mad about Syracuse - they served their time. They don't deserve to be in the tournament because of their resume, but hey, they did a great job when it mattered and they are where they are.

North Carolina on the other hand is yet to serve their penalty, and on top of that, when penalties were supposed to start being handed out, they were busted for cheating AGAIN, so they got off the hook this year because they need to be back under review...just so happens to be within a few weeks of them being named AP #1 basketball team.

Nothing but a two decade coincidence.

"In mid-August, North Carolina went Four Corners on the NCAA and delayed its endlessly ongoing academic fraud case until after this promising season was complete. Dean Smith would have been proud of the stall ball: The school announced that it found additional violations in women’s basketball and men’s soccer that would delay its response to a Notice of Allegations and thus extend the timetable for the entire case. There is no assertion that the discovery of the violations was bogus, or that this was a ruse concocted by the school. But as negative announcements go, this one was fortuitously timed. It meant that this promising basketball season – North Carolina would start No. 1 in the AP poll – would not be compromised in any way by a Committee On Infractions ruling."

I would really like the NCAA to throw the book at UNC so hard that they never come back from it but, alas, I know I am dreaming.

I don't think so, I think the hammer will come down, just can't get in the way of the current national title run.

Yeah, just like it came down on Penn State; bluster and look tough and then when everyone is looking the other way back off so ultimately it is just a blip on the radar for the program.

Way up there
You guys are soooo quick to judge, why isn't it completely realistic that every athletic program at UNC was cheating EXCEPT the pride of the school/biggest moneymaker/most nationally known program/basically everything the school is known for basketball program.

I think the funniest thing about Syracuse is that if SMU and Louisville were better at delaying the process, they'd be nowhere to found in this tournament.

Oddly enough, we just watched Blue Chips, the movie where Coach Nick Nolte allowed boosters to pay off players and parents. But, that was fiction.

Cheaters usually win. You suck if you don't.
