Why do journalists and the media think anyone cares about this NIL stuff?

When I buy sports jerseys I am more interested in the Team Logo and Jersey. I am trying to figure out the value of just a college athlete’s name on the back of a shirt without the Collegiate School Licensed Jersey. To me it is the Logo and school colors that determine a large value of that Jersey.

Individual Players do not get checks because the NFL licensed gear has the number and name of an athlete on it. According to what I have read. Individual advertising and endorsements are different. Not sure what road this is going down. I can see agents swooping in like vultures.

And so it begins, almost immediately. Just wait until the various oil companies start bank rolling all the Texas/Oklahoma teams.
Yep, I saw a report that several basketball players already have some big $$$ agreements. We will see if it is true.

Horse is out of the barn now so I guess adapt to it or die. Maybe it will help to spread the talent a little more evenly across the country? Guess we will see on that.

It IS newsworthy, and it IS the offseason, but I kinda agree with Gunner on this...

I just don't have much interest in the business side of sports. I'm obsessed with rankings, recruiting, recruiting rankings, polls, and of course, the games. But I couldn't care less about Supreme Court decisions on the NCAA's definition of amateurism or the effects of NIL on college athletes.

I suspect a lot of college athletes are going to be disappointed when they find out businesses and fans don't really care about their business ventures and endorsements. Of course, many will be able to make money. But I don't think a lot of these athletes really understand what NIL will/won't do for them. They all think they're going to get a big weekly paycheck.

Yep, one thing I'm kind of interested in is if the intra-team dynamics will become an issue? I wonder how say a O Lineman will feel when the star QB or RB is making a good amount of money and the OL is making hardly anything off this NIL stuff. That going to cause some tension? Maybe will or maybe not....I don't know.

Really, at most schools, your probably only talking about a small handful of students between football and the men's basketball team who will hake enough money where it'd be worth it. People like Georges, Monte, and Naz would probably have been able to make good money. On todays football team, someone like Purdy, Hall, Rose, and Kohlar could probably make decent money. But everyone else under the athletic umbrella may get opportunities here and there, but nothing consistent.

OmG Rick Stainless just waved as he slid past Jim “The Hammer” Methlab in the main feature at Boone Speedway to take the Checkerboard flag! Holy **** most amazing moment in sports history, will live on forever!

Grandview winning the NAIA wrestling championships is the most impressive sports feat in Iowa history! We’ll have their coach on for an hour every week for the next

That’s this.

I would assume that would be no different then the current NFL. How does the O-line of Greenbay feel about Rodgers salary and endorsements? For O-line, I would assume that is the story of their careers, not getting the proper recognition for their contributions to the QB and RB.

Oh, agree....but, if they are roommates with the running back their freshman year that's getting more spending money that could definitely create dynamics.. I also believe the "market" will level out....Ames, IA only has so many businesses.....and at some point businesses also only invest in things that return on investment. BUT, will a business try to get a freshman in the event they become big later? Kyle Kempt....prior to the Oklahoma game....NIL not worth much....after...much bigger.

Also i wonder the unwritten rules "hey, wanna be star running back....focus on the playbook not on your instagram tonight"

It truly will be fascinating to see how this all plays out nationally and locally.

One thing I just thought of, with the diva/entitlement culture at Texas, I could see your point of locker room jealously of players getting more than others.

It'll be really interesting to see how this changes the athlete/fan relationship on social media too.

The idiot that already tweets at college kids is going to feel even more emboldened I would imagine.

Agree.....same thought with things as simple as autographs.....if a player has a "signing" at a local business....will they still sign after a game for a kid?

So, tell me again why a UT booster that owns a car dealership can't pay an OL more than his buddy who owns a bank pays the QB...? Bro, do you guys even NIL?

This might go down as the most transformational story in the history of college athletics. I'm sorry if that doesn't get you fired up. Will check ratings when they come out and see if we lost listenership over discussing it instead of deep dives on the AL Central.

Yeah but other than changing the very paradigm and bedrock that college athetics was built on, why is it such a big deal? :jimlad:

If I interpret your question correctly, you're asking, if an athlete can make money signing autographs, will the athlete be willing to do it for free elsewhere? Seems like that's up to the person. And it's possible to do both.

This is pretty good. I'm sure the Compliance Departments get a good laugh from this cause some of this probably isn't too far from the truth with what they are dealing with:

I haven't read much about this, but one thing I thought of regarding NIL is how this will affect team dynamics. I can't believe that there is never going to be any jealousy if Player A makes $500 for an appearance and Player B struggles to get 1 person to pay $40 for a cameo. Hell, it is probably the parents that will be the worst about this. Parents get worked up about playing time and encourage their kids to transfer. You don't think they'll get worked up about the lack of money their kid is making at Iowa State?
